Hi, I'm fairly new to poker but have read 3 or 4 books recently. I've never played in a casino or anything but I do play a bit online but mainly 25c tournaments and stuff like that. But I was wondering what the general standard of other player abilities is? Online they don't seem to be good, mainly they play safe or just make stupid gambles but do most people play by statistics online?

Also I was wondering what the ability is like in casinos in town, like do people actually show tells that you'd read in books or do most people no enough to be better than that? Just thought of playing with higher stakes so any help would be great...
    Thanks:)

EDIT: I guess mainly what I want to know is have most players read books, take it seriously and play by stats.

its like going back to school. so yes u need to study as much as u can, but u also need to put it into practice.

play live in the small buyins around. put what u read to the test and see how u get on.

    and gl

Online standards is generally better than live. In cash anyway not so sure about tournaments. And yes alot of people have read alot of stuff. The game has taken off quite abit in the last few years and since the UIGEA came in banning alot of sites from taking American players in alot of the fish have gone from the game. You'd want to read up the stickies in this forum and post hands of your trouble spots and stuff like that to improve but its definitely beatable.

In town yes you pick up the odd tell but it isn't worth nearly anything considering how like it takes to actually know it's a tell. The best tells you can look for is peoples betting patterns. How much they bet, when they bet, when they check stuff like that. It'll be alot to take in at first but I would not worry about tells so much!

I've found people a lot easier to read live, well the less experienced ones anyway. Sometimes you can tell by stuff they say, and you can remember their mannerisms and confidence and stuff. And putting a face to each player and the fact that hands move slower makes it a lot easier to remember their betting patterns than simply a name like pokergurl5029

Having said I must be easier to read too because I don't do much better live than online!
