Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

Long long long time reader first time poster, was just wondering if anyone could help. Came out to the car today and couldn't select a gear, as in I could do circles with the gear stick (great start to a Monday!). Called the AA, man comes out says I've snapped a gear cable. He towed it to the garrage close to where I am. Garage came back today and said it'd cost €300 approx (including labour) to fix? Total novice here so just wondering if this sounds about right?

    Thanks for your help.

No the mechanic and the AA man said a gear cable, snapped just before it meets the plastic molding, but as I said im the novice here, absolutly no indication it was wearing away, gears were fine, thank god I wasn't in traffic.

    1. I have never heard of a gear cable but I'm not a mechanic! I still suspect that its the clutch cable.
    2. The part itself is possibly about €20 (maybe more, I don't know). However, The quote looks like its about two or three hours work. I can not visualise this amount of time being spent. Maybe someone familiar with this car can?
    3. Is your car at a main dealer? Do you plan on bringing it somewhere else (bearing in mond that your can't really drive it and a tow would cost you)?

I'm guessing there's a cable connecting the gearstick and gearbox and that's snapped. How much it should cost depends on the cost of the cable and the amount of time required to refit. I'd post the make model, & year of the car - it might help our resident mechanics with the quote.;)

UPDATE: Thanks for your help guys, it was the gear cable in the end, thought I was going mad there for a while!

The part came to 99.73 ext vat, took 1.5hrs to fix, so less than €300 for the job in total. Sounds ok I suppose
