While I don't doubt that this would be far more terrifying, believe me when I say it was a scary pub. I can't quite describe the atmosphere but I've experienced mild curiosity many times and these people were just plainly hostile.

    Are you talking about Graingers??
Cos Graingers is a grand pub, not a thing wrong with it!

    The Office in Bray.

A friend of mine was on crutches and v. v. drunk. He slipped backwards poured his drink on this guy who went mental and started kicking him on the ground. He was held back by one of his friends after a while. I got the bouncer.
Then my friend was carried out by the female barstaff while the male bouncers supervised.
I don't think the other guy had to leave at all.
    Really very strange.

But your friend poured a drink all over him! Proper order.

    Damn students.

not a dodgy pub at all but just remembered a place in limerick up an alleyway.
was a sort of dark , dingy place but i thought it was great , went back about 10 years ago and asked for it but was told it had closed.
anyone got the name of it?

Not the West End on O'Curry street is it? A friend of mine played a game of pool in there once against a bloke who had a shotgun under his coat.

From reading this thread what I've learnt is "dodgy pubs" tend to be more customer focussed, e.g. you can do whatever you want.

oh i have been reading thi thread and had to join in :-)
the original barnstormers was on capel st , was run by the devil disciples MC,
great boozer - they ued to let us drive the bikes intot he back room and leave them over night , place would be packed and we would open up and drive right in

as for the glimmer man on harolds cross bridge - great spot up stairs on a friday night in the 90's - another bike gig ( road rockers MC ) some of my best nights had there , great bands and you could smoke your head of no bother

does anyone remember the duginn on bray sea front ?? what a ****ing kip , first time into it i was welcomed by the owners German Shepard doing a steaming crap on the carpet , one night i was about to walk in and this Spanish student came flying out the door horizontal at eye level :-) , i did not miss a step

and then the old china man , a legend of a pub , ( tear in my eye thinking about the place ) , then bartley dunnes , oh it takes me back

i ran a bar in frankfurt and let me tell ya i was mental due to all the American soldiers and British squaddies - grade a mental kip , used the pool q many a night to ward off drunken Americans
it was so notorious in germany that Gaddafi was going to blow it up , but he chose a night club in berlin instead , that started the americans bombing Tripoli , when they arrested the guys for the bombing they found the target list and the irish bar in frankfurt was top of the list

Popped into some pub opposite Connelly Station a few months back just to kill 20 mins before I had to be somewhere and everyone in the place just stared me out of it the whole time. I took out an a4 pad and a pen just to write something down and people started pointing at me and whispering to each other.

    Very scary.

    Cleary's?

First they came for the socialists...

Back in the 80's I popped into the Black Sheep in Coolock for a quick pint. It was probably the quickest pint I ever had. Everybody was staring the head off me. Made me feel very uncomfortable.

Off Fox's Bow? Christ thats a blast from the past. Place was a bit of a hole but no one dodgy was in there. TBH the smell of weed out of there meant no one was capable of causing harm.

I see Fat Cats in Glasgow has had its day. Probably one of the only pubs were the Police regularly entered on their beat.

All pubs which have dirty/unhygienic toilets/bathrooms, which in 2012 would constitute a good 60% of Irish pubs. Yes, in upper middle class urban areas such toilets are far fewer but in working class and rural areas they are dominant.

It's consistently astonishing that pubs with such toilets have not been closed down.

As somebody advised me recently: "Look at a pub's toilet, and you have an idea of the quality of food they're serving"

Oh it was still very much a gay bar - which happened to get the dregs of the gay and lesbian community. It was as rough as hell.

It's now The Blue Goose and is no longer a gay bar. The owners also own a gay sauna along the same quay and a gay guesthouse.

Its now Fibbers Rock Bar, has been for some time.

    Where is Fat Cats?

Love this thread! Been in a fair few dodgy pubs in my time.

    Limerick: The Moose....dodge city!

Cork: Lynch's Bar and the Brown Derby on Barrack Street. As a big Celtic fan, I liked the atmosphere in Lynches but it had some seriously shadey clientele. Red Cove Inn in Mahon also has to be up there! Haven't been to the Rob and Kill so that would probably win the dodgiest pub from what I hear about that gaff.

Glasgow: Where to begin!! The Sub Crawl (pub crawl on the Clockwork Orange subway if you dinnae guess from the name!) brings up a fair few pubs. The Stadium Bar in Ibrox is not for the faint hearted, I had to keep my mouth shut for the whole time I was in there on advice from friends. Although my buddy from Dublin often drinks in there so it can't all be that bad. The Kensington Bar on Paisley Road West is far worse...the stink of piss and sectarianism is enormous! Doon the Gallowgate chalks up a few dodgy places for a pint - the Squirrel is riddled with dafties and pissheads who itch for a fight. Doctors in Kinning Park (not sure if its still open) is famed for its rep although I didn't have any trouble in there. Can't forget the Louden Tavern on Duke Street...the greatest wee pub in the world according to the sign out the door. Never been in...I'm not that stupid!!!! Theres definitely worse places in the north of the city, haven't had the balls to investigate further.

London: Only just moved to the east end but eyeing up a few spots...anywhere draped in St. George flags I'd imagine! :p

The police go into Glasgow pubs on a regular basis as part of their beat. I've been in pubs numerous times when this has happened and locals have told me it's a regular occurrence.

Gettin all misty eyed for the Chinaman reading this thread. Never had any trouble in it myself but did see the odd rumble. Pints of Guinness for 1.50, rolling joints on the bar, loads of punk and reggae on the jukebox and a pool table. What more could you want?
The Fountain on Benburb Street also deserves a mention. Lads bringing 2 litres in and slyly pouring them into their pint glass under the table, open hash smoking and the roughest hookers in Dublin standing outside touting for business. Got carried out in an awful state one night by the local version of Rab C. Nesbitt and his mates. Still get stick off my mates over it.

Went on a bit of nostalgia tour around the parts of Manchester my Dad had lived in when he first moved over...
We were in some back street pub in Moss Side, Dad having a pint, me a diet coke keeping our distance from the very scary locals, when an ice cream van pulls up outside and everyone, including the barman went out to it, Dad being a bit aware decides its time to drink up (I think I was niave enough to believe they just all really wanted a Cornetto), as they all filtered back in, minus ice creams, at least 10 of them went straight to through to the toilets... We left.

Was in a club under a Church in Toxteth for an 18th years ago.... women with black eyes, several fights broke out and then his grannys mate stripped for him :eek:

Was in Kilburn for the Champions League final, started in the Black Lion which was rammed with a mix of Manchester and Irish - absolutely brilliant crowd, then moved onto The Golden Egg (iirc) to watch the match with the others who hadn't a ticket... Christ on a bike! Filled with Chelsea wide boys, Salford reds who had been evicted from Wembley and loads of Eastern European guys cheering on Barca. It kicked off big style, very, very scary place!

Went into a bar called the Clwydian on the main street of Prestatyn, North Wales with a mate to get a pint and a burger. As soon as we ordered a drink the barman looked at us like we had 10 heads. The place was full of English scumbags who where staying in the nearby Pontins camp. They seemed to be sharing 2 or 3 girls between 30 of them and then jumped on all the tables throwing glasses on the floor and chanting a generic English 'we're the lads and we drink beer' type chant. We kept our voices down finished our food and left.

Theres some late bar down the end of the Warmostraat in The Red Light District that we ended up falling into one night, the most haggard looking prostitutes rubbing up against all the drug dealers and shady characters that had been wandering around. A fairly nasty place, we didn't stick around.

The Queens in Dundalk (no longer in existance). One day a group of lads were watching horse racing on the t.v. The horse one of them backed was beaten on the run in and he pulled out a handgun and shot the fcuking television.
There were more than one or two scary pubs in Dundalk years ago.

Either The Steering Wheel, O'Riadas or the Olympic Arms in Limerick. and Im from Limerick so I can say it :D

Years ago Monaghan United were sponsored by a pub in Clondalkin called the Steering Wheel so a gang of us decided it would be a good idea to go to its namesake in Limerick when we were down for a game. We got photos taken outside it with our steering wheel jerseys on us and proceeded inside.

We didn't stay to long, maybe had something to do with the blood stains on the floor or the old fella at the bar talking bout being "langered" while drool ran down his chin. We survived though.

I was in a pub just outside Lens in France with 2 French friends. We walked in and the bar went quiet. Everyone turned to stare at me coz I was speaking English. It was a real dive of a place with sawdust on the floor and a menacing atmosphere.
