Good enough point Blackblade, it can be unfair to make generalisations in some cases.

I think we also have to factor in the instance when a random punter finds themselves in a different pub, and that coinciding with something rather unsavoury and out-of-the-ordinary kicking off. It can happen to the best of them.

Then again, it could also be a case of pub-regulars feeling comfortable and safe in their own environment. And, irregulars feeling acutely uneasy, verging on paranoid in an alien environment. Alcohol can mess things up as well.

But as I mentioned b4 a while back, there is no such thing as a bad pub, its just that some are better than others.

The towers in Ballymun is a decent place with a nice regular older crowed.
toilets need a revamp but it still pulls a good crowed.

The Bottom of the hill in finglas is another decent pub.
had a bad rep in the 80's but that was a long long time ago.
Nice place these days and well worth a look on a monday night for a good cabaret sing along..

the oasis in Cabra is indeed a **** hole tho

but the worst pub over here has got to be the furry bog in rathfarnham.

I understand and similiar points have been raised earlier in the thread.
For me the Public Houses that are refused renewal of their license is a clue to their unsocial influence.

I wound up in Mageniss' Bar in Belfast not long after the Robert McCartney stabbing. I was heading up to uni in coleraine and the train stopped in Belfast with another one not along for two hours.
This was early enough in the day. So i just walked around the place lookin somewhere to have a pint and read a book.
It was the first pub i came across and I didnt even realise the significance so i dodged on in.
The bar owner was stood up on the bar in a massive purple dufflecoat zipped up to his nose, roaring "Is This the Way to Amarillo" and insisting it be played on the jukebox over and over.
I came in and he started demanding to know who i was and what i was doing there.
He asked where i was from and I said Crossmaglen and he basically informed the staff that i wasnt to pay for a drink.
Sure enough several trains went by before i stumbled out, wandering stocious around Belfast in the middle of the night.
Not sure what happened but i woke up on my friend's couch alive and well (well, not well, but alive.)
Dunno if you'd call that dodgy but it was certainly an experience.

@Heres Your Future, what comment did u make to the girl with the busted nose?

@ Liam. Ha ha! Love that image of the Chinese man ringing his bell.

    Cheers lads, both top shares...

It wasn't the girl with the busted nose I spoke to, it was the one who hit her! I can't remember exactly what I said, something sarky like 'that was nice of you' she just glared at me, left the pub then returned a minute later with 5 lads ready to beat the proverbial out of me...

Lucky enough CJ...could have been a whole lot different in a different pub...ah man, there was loads of awful things that did happen back in them days. People walking straight off the train, had a bit of time to kill and took the wrong route...ended up in a coffin.

Well it was 2005, hardly the 70s or 80s. I got advised to quickly leave a pub in Coleraine once, think that's about as close as I ever came to anything more serious happening

hahaha! Each to his own as they say:

    From www.InDublin.ie

Directions: In the Whitechurch area of Rathfarnham

Detail: Most of the clientele at the Furry Bog are locals but don't let this put you off because they create a great atmosphere. There is live music at the weekends and the staff are very efficient.

"The furry bog is a great pub to socialise in, the staff are very friendly and efficient as are the locals. It is a family orientated pub geared around entertainment for the wider age bracket, whether, the bingo on tuesday nights or the karaoke on thursday night, the darts on a friday night or the kids disco on sunday afternoon the ballad session in the bar sunday evening or the band in the lounge sunday night, there is something for everyone, the toilets are spotless as is the whole pub itself, it's a shame some people are put off by the fact it is positioned in a council estate, as it's the input of the local people from around and the community spirit that gives the pub such a great atmosphere. Well worth a visit in my opinion, it's a great place for a night out".

Wow! Must take the wife and kids there!

The towers is a dump, falling to pieces, serving crap beer, and packed with with an "older crowd" of emaciated dipso's who are pishing their last.

It was'nt even as run down and depressing a kip back in the 80/90's

You obviously havnt been there in a while and dont know much about it!
they decorated the place about 2 years ago!
everything except the toilets in fairness!

its known for one of the best pints of guinness in dublin and still holds the record for most pints of the black stuff sold!

honestly its not half as bad as people think!
I would rather drink in a few other pubs but for a quick pint and a chat its not bad at all!

Central Bar Drogheda, ventured in one day to see what the fuss was about and everyone turned and...glared, I think. Hightailed it right back out! There's always people crying and hugging each other outside it. Oh and some pub in Bellaghy Co. Derry.

So someone says "let's go to the Penthouse" and you go to a pub with large signage over it clearly saying Penthouse. You don't like said pub and decide to make a thread with a reference to it but call it Playhouse?

A pub full of (what you call) scumbags might be the least of your worries.

Keeping OT- Brady's in Kells Co. Meath. Beating The Royal on Stephen's St. just because The Royal has a regular that fed his brother to the pigs on his farm in the 70's, he's a really interesting guy.

The Saracen's Head in the Gallowgate in Glasgow.

An unusual mix of ridiculously underage drinkers, middle aged gents with "Glasgow smiles" aka face slashings, guys trying to sell you whatever they had robbed from the Forge shopping centre, ladies of the evening, winos, a barmaid who looked like Andre the Giant and us.

Not for the faint hearted and makes any Ballymun boozer look like the Ritz.

    Pint was reasonable.

Corduff inn. Clientele are unsavoury to say the least and some of the staff are the same. Don't want to go into detail.

The Royal's not really a place for discussing retro gaming.
