What's the lifespan of an Irish cheque? 6 months or longer?

Generally 6 months from the date on the cheque.

Six months after the cheque is dated, banks will not pay it and will return it unpaid with the response 'out of date' . The person who has written the cheque should be asked to change the date and write their initials against the new date. If the cheque was received in payment for a purchase or for money owed to you (as opposed to just a gift), then the obligation of the person who has given you the cheque still exists for 6 years. After 6 years you cannot legally persue the person for the outstanding debt.
