Moving from Vodafone to O2 - How to do it painlessly

My contract with Vodafone is up in 1 months time. I intend to move to O2 and keep my existing number. How do i this painlessly? i.e. without vodafone taking money i dont owe them. Could i do this now and just buy out the last month of my contract?

Pay your last bill go into o2 and request a port. 99/100 it works fine.
