Any herbs (or similar) that can grow on a windowsill at this time of year?

I would quite like to grow some herbs myself on a windowsill for both the appearance and to use in cooking. However, I know very little in the way of gardening. I have read some threads and other resources on growing herbs or similar plants, which give some ideas. Is there any herbs that could be planted/grown starting say…
