Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Earth is entering a stream of dusty debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle, the source of the annual Perseid meteor shower. Although the shower won't peak until August 11th and 12th, the show is already getting underway.

This year, predicted maximum takes place on the night of Wednesday August 12th between 17:30hrs and 20:00hrs UT.

I only have a point and shoot, but some of you out there with tripods and anything but a point and shoot should be able to get a few nice shots on Wednesday (the shutter delay function, forget the name of it)...

According to those who know best, today is the best time to see the shower. This morning before dawn would have been good if it wasn't pouring buckets of rain in Dublin !! I even set my alarm and quickly jumped back into bed when i saw the weather.

But tonight if we get clear skys we could have a good chance of seeing some.

Any tips on how best to capture it should the unlikely happen and we get clear skys ?

Love this time of the year for meteor showers. Might head up to wicklow mountains or somewhere in the middle of nowhere if it gets any clearer. Have never captured it on camera though.

Or is there any sign of people meeting up anywhere for this?

Try looking for local astronomy clubs or try Astronomy Ireland.

There is a fairly active astronomy club in Co. Kerry and they sometimes go to the carparks on what is known locally as the "short mountain" on the Slieve Mish mountains above Tralee and Castlemaine.
