wooden poles to be submerged in concrete

    Have been advised to treat the above-mentioned with bitumen based paint but I've had a look for bitumen-based paint in local builders' merchants and all they have is Bitumen Trowel Mastic or Roof seal

    Which of these would be the most suitable and do you know what the drying time is as it seemed unclear on the tin and there was no mention of using it to treat timber OR does anyone have a better idea for treating the timber?

    IMO, try not submerge them in concrete because with the best will in the world they wont last: consider casting some metal pipe up to ground level.

    If u tell us what u are doing we might have some other ideas.

    Timber has a finite life that's for sure and surrounding it in concrete doesn't help in prolonging it's life. That said the ESB are happy that their timber poles will give 20+ years of service in the ground. Their poles are treated with creosote, but I imagine that a tanalised pole, if bitumen painted at its base, might give 10+ of service.
