IT Carlow and the FAI of Ireland Launch Degree Programme
    Date:
    13th August 2009

    Details:
IT Carlow and the Football Association of Ireland today announced the launch of the first ever Bachelor of Arts in Sports and Exercise in soccer.

The three-year full time BA in Sports and Exercise (Soccer) commences at the Institute of Technology (IT) Carlow in September and will be run in association with the FAI. Graduates of the Level 7 ordinary degree course will gain a qualification that combines coaching, fitness and player development with business or communications and public relations.

IT Carlow president Dr Ruaidhri Neavyn said, “We are delighted to launch this new course in association with the FAI and believe this represents new thinking and innovation in relation to the development of the sport as well as creating a solid link with education.”

Welcoming the announcement, FAI Chief Executive, John Delaney said, “This course will help to improve the game in Ireland as players who wish to stay at home and work towards an education while continuing to play football can now be catered for in a new and unique way. The FAI are happy to have sponsors such as Playsport 365 LTD to support third level programmes of this type which are important to the future of the sport.”

Republic of Ireland manager, Giovanni Trapattoni, present in IT Carlow to launch the new course said, “I would like to wish everyone involved in this course every success for the future. Football offers a large number of career possibilities for young people, as players and administrators. Having a course like this here in Carlow is a very positive development for the growth of our game in Ireland.”

Applicants can apply for the course directly to IT Carlow and will be assessed on the basis of a combination of Leaving Certificate points and a portfolio providing details of the student's playing, volunteer and coaching background.

The degree course follows the introduction by IT Carlow of a similar programme in rugby, which is now in its second year, and GAA which also begins this September.
