On the topic of 50... a 1.4 or 1.8? is the 1.8 worth getting?

Depends if you have €80 burning a hole in your wallet or about €300+

Sorry, should have said in my post above. I've the 1.8 and for the money its bloody fantastic for people and low light.
Its razor sharp throughout, but i believe the 1.4 is even better and is even a better built. The 1.8 feels cheap to handle (because it is to purchase) but its highly recommend.

To a camera noob, what's that mean? What would a Canon 500d be?

Some goooorgeous shots in this thread! My 50mm (Minolta, 1.7) arrived today, finally, after getting lost in Germany for a week. Cannot wait to get out and have some fun with it :D

Some great pics here. As somebody else commented, would like to know which lens/camera combo people are using just out of interest.

    A couple of mine.....

    Nikon 1.8 on a D300. First pic @ F1.8, Second one @ F4

I love this lens, just don't get to use either it or the camera often enough :(

My Minolta AF 50mm f1.7 lens is my favourite lens. I love that I can point it at something and 9 times out of 10 with no effort get a usable shot, and if I do put in the effort, get a beautiful one :) I use it on a Sony Alpha 200 so it is cropped for digital to effectively be around 70mm, but I've found that so long as I say 'screw it, I'm going to find the right position regardless of who's looking' I can usually find the right distance and angle even if the subject isn't that far away

It of course does that wonderful shallow depth of field effect that can give portraits a wonderful dreamy feel:

It will take detailed shots in low light:

oh and the 1.7 makes it faaaaast. Fast enough to freeze a sprinting cheetah: (oh how I wish I'd gotten this shot in focus though. Still learning!)

Oh! and one more benefit :D Though I am usually loath to bring my camera out with me after 7pm if there will be alcohol involved (!) if there is a reason or a special ocassion, it takes "facebook photos" that are actually worth keeping, lol, as aperture lets you take photos that compensate for the dark AND for cameraman wobble!

Im taking tentative steps into the DSLR world. Recently purchased the US 500D (Rebel T1i) with kit lens (18-55mm), but treated myself to an xmas pressie of the 50mm F1.8, after some great advice from this forum.

Heres the test shots from this afternoon

I really enjoy this lens-simple, light, and makes you move to get the shots that you want sometimes.

First shot with my nifty fifty which really was a nifty fifty 'cos it only cost me fifty quid on adverts.ie.....:D

    89A12BA45186437F9B3044DCFC21F9B1.jpg

Shot this at f2 becasue I thought 1.8 was too shallow. Taken for the current boards assignment.

Sorry to dig up a long dead thread but this seems to be the definitive Nifty 50 thread in the forum and I thought it was better to bump this than create another. I picked up one yesterday after waiting way to long to buy one. Regret not getting it earlier now. It is a fabulous portrait lens. It seems so crisp image wise and is so much faster at focusing compared to the stock 18-55 lens.
