what do you want to do with the upgraded system?

    and budget for upgrade? :)

You may be able to drop in an AM2+ Phenom II even though it's not officially supported.
Someone had it working with no problems on the nForce 590 version of your board here

Do you game? What games? at what resolution?

What speed is the HDD? If it's <7,200 rpm or close to full, a larger on cost not much.
    What speed is the RAM?

    what's your budget?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 82 ✭✭somanynames90

mmm my buget would be about €300

I just want to get it up to date

Speed of the ram would be DDR2 PC5400 something i need to check again

I let yous know in a little bit - still on work :P

At current how would you rate this machine

up to date is subjective. :P

is for playing crysis at 1900*1080 res with all the bells & whistles?

    or something less taxing?

Im happy enough with the Dual Core -

May be another GIG of RAM

    Storage is not an iusse

It's absolute overkill for running notepad on Win95.

Like I Play FPS and the odd DOW game also, and simular, I kinda do a small bit of design work also,

So i need to cover all the Bases

You could upgrade to something like a Radeon HD4770 or 4850 for ~€100

And as for RAM, you could either go for a new 2x2GB PC2-6400 kit and throw out your old RAM, or get a second 2x1GB kit. There'd only be a few € difference in prices anyhow

What would be the same but in Nvidia Class?

nvidia have the GTS250 (which is a rebranded 9800GTX (which is a rebranded 8800GTS 512MB))

and the GTX260 which would probably be overkill for your screen size

Would you think it be worth my while ?

Ram wont make much of a difference

To make the biggest difference you should upgrade the video card
to what the others mentioned, or if you want nvidia only get a GTS250 they are close to 100 euros now

Otherwise just get a bigger better hdd, 1TB are now 70 euros

They will make the biggest difference for the least price
Your PC is fine with a GTS250 for most modern games

I have a 4850/1gb and it has yet to be put under any major strain. It's the cpu that seems to be the bottle neck at this stage. Dual core E6600.

Basically, there's little reason to go any lower than a HD4830 or 9800GT (GTS240) unless that monitor has a maximum resolution of 1024*768 ;) If it maxes out at 1650*1080/1600*1200 (very unlikely unless it was a top-end model) or you want ultimate performance at 1440*900/1280*1024 you could get a HD4850 for under €100. GTS250 is inferior and still quite a bit more expensive in most places (that don't charge you €30 shipping ;)). Plus with the HD4830/50 you can get a quick-and-dirty OC via CCC rather than hacking drivers with RivaTuner :P

A 2*2GB PC8500 DDR2 kit may be an option, as you should be looking at spending less than €50 on one. And hopefully a 500GB 7200RPM SATA HDD should be around the same in some places.

But I do have one unpleasant question: what brand is that PSU? Any normal 750W PSU is utter overkill for your system, but a cheap fake PSU could crap out past 250W... :(

the CPU should be atleast 2.6GHZ but get INTEL ... NOT AMD !!!

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

    Er, old.

Aside from the bizarre results in Adobe CS4 Phenom 2 is pretty near parity with Core2. Only cheaper. Phenom 1 is roughly 10% behind clock-for-clock and Athlon 2 (based on Phenom 1/2, not Athlon) is somewhere near the middle unless the small cache causes issues. The days of Athlon 1 are now behind AMD, so please change that old tune.
Sorry my mistake it looks like 330W my bad

    What brand and model number?

Upgrading the graphics card to a 4850 or ATI equivalent will need a better PSU that than the one you currently have.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 18,377 Mod ✭✭✭✭Solitaire

With a 95W CPU further OCd and a 7900GS I'm surprised that PSU hasn't parted company with this mortal coil already. Those old, cheapo ATX1.3 units are mediocre quality and have very little of the overall wattage dedicated to the 12V rail - maybe 50% of total output if you're very lucky. Needless to say a better, hungrier graphics card will easily convince it to give up the ghost :(

Actually I just noticed that second pic... looks like nTune is having a fun day out, as it invariably tends to do :D OCd PCIe bus, and 300/200MHz for the graphics card?!!? Gotta love nTune lol.gif

And why did you get a 750W PSU when a decent 450-550W model would have done? I hope it was cheap! :P Otherwise you're grand - even if the HDD is so tiny ;)
