having been told by my doctor that my blood sugar is too high i am trying to reduce it. i have changed my diet to a suitable one, however i think my downfall is still drinking cider.

i enjoy going for a few pints a few times a week with my friends and i drink cans of bulmers. i am assuming this would be a bad choice for blood sugar levels so i am wondering whats the best alternative??

maybe a lager or i have even heard that a 'dry' cider may be better. any help would be great. thanks in advance...

I am going to move this from the "nutrition & diet" forum
    From the charter
    3.
Bear in mind we are not professional nutritionists and we are not doctors, so don't look for medical advice. Please seek advice from your Dr. or a Nutritionist before embarking on any major overhaul of your eating habits. If you have any pre-exisitng condition that requires specific nutritional needs please note that the N&D forum is NOT a substitute for a qualified dietician. We cannot advise on the best diet for these circumstances and any posts doing so will be edited/ deleted as necessary.
I think it is better suited to the "long term illness" forum

You're really will have to contact your doctor, I have no idea the how serious your condition is so I do not want you getting misinformation. Alcoholic drinks are a very grey area, for some reason (which I never understood) they are exempt from having to disclose their ingredients. I have studied alcohol production a lot, and have seen a lot of misinformation and assumptions. e.g. many vodkas and whiskey do contain sugar to smoothen the taste, while many will wrongly assume they have none. I would not expect most GPs to even know this, but a specialist in diabetes would, I expect they will have contacted various companies.

I would expect bulmers is a no-no, even bulmers light will contain unfermented sugars, but would be a lot better. Heineken is quite high in sugar, especially when you take into account the volumes people might drink.

Dry cider/wine means it is fermented well but sugars do remain, I do not know your allowances though so cannot recommend them. Bulmers light has artificial sweetners added. There will always be residual sugars, pure spirits have no sugar passed over in the distillation process, but could be added, tesco usually list ingredients, but I would still contact a specialist.

By coincidence I recently emailed bulmers
Is the new pear cider made with just 100% pears as described in the
adverts. I am a diabetic with allergies to processed sugars but would
be able to drink a pure pear cider.
    Hi ***,

Unfortunately, it's not suitable for diabetics.

    Kind Regards,

I am not a diabetic, I was actually fishing for them to admit it did have sugar, since their ads are very misleading.

    Best of luck with it.

Alcohol diverts precious resources of your liver that would normally regulate blood sugar levels so not a good idea for someone with blood sugar issues.

Alcohol can make blood sugar spike or dip, depending on the circumstances so I would advise abstaining until you have your blood sugar under control.

I'm sorry- but we are not going to allow discussion of alcohol consumption for diabetics (or other groups) in this forum. OP- if you are genuinely interested- please discuss it with your diabetic consultant and dietician.

    Thread closed.
