Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

OK - here we go again. Best consumer walkabout lens for an Eos 450D?

    Current lenses:

    17-85 IS
    50mm 1.4
    12-24 Tokina
    55-200 Sigma.

Use the 17-85 all the time (great pictures, even though reviews claim it's soft), but I'd like something with a little more zoom, to avoid swapping lenses. I've only used the Sigma once..and it was a cheapo I suppose. Looking at the Canon 28-135 EF IS lens, but reviews are mixed. Some say it's crisp and sharp, but many complain on lens creep. It's also a dust gatherer, apparently.

I don't really want to lash out on an L lens, so all advice appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Freddie.

Do you plan on sticking with the 1.6 Cropped bodies?

If you do, the *best* walkaround zoom is going to be the 17-55 2.8 IS.... It's not the cheapest, but you said best :pac:

Yeah, I'll probably stick with the crop Fajitas. I enjoy it - but not enough to warrant the FF expense. I looked at that - wow.....price!!!!

    Thanks for the reply.;)

Tbh though, it's worth every penny of that price - I don't own one myself, but know several others that do, sharpness, AF, control of distortion, all excellent, the only thing it's missing from being an L lens is the metal body... (It even has the price :pac: )

If you were looking for a zoom that'd do you for a long time, that's it!

yeah its a tough one alright. the only lens i've looked at on-line that kinda matches the *zoom* requirements is the 24-105 L - but then thats outta price range - also I find on the 1.6 bodies that 24 isn't wide enough for what i want - and I like better than F4.

I'd go with fajitas suggestion - but its even less zoom than you have now. if there' nothing wrong with the 17-85, except what reviews say, maybe stick with that ?

the only lens that will really stop you swapping lenses is those 18-250 yokes - which i imagine excel at nothing?

Having the 2.8 is well worth the 30mm on the longer end :pac:

I think you may be right. The only alternative is the 2.8 18-55. But,. at €760, I don't think I can justify the expenditure. Methinks I'll hold fire for a while.

    Thanks again folks.:)

After months of deliberation I opted for the 50mm f 1.4 (see the "50...and Proud.. thread).

This might be a useful guide:

35mm on a crop body seems to be very popular. However, the objectivity achieved with the 50mm (equivalent of 80mm on a crop body) suits me at the moment.

I find a very good walkaround lens for my 450D is the Tamron 18-270, plenty of zoom.
