I see esat is the 2nd hop on the tacert. Would that mean that I am actually connecting to BT and not eircom who I am signed up with?

Borrowed a modem from my sister who is an BT customer.

    Yes.

You'll have to change the username and password in the modem. Right now it's connecting with your sisters credentials.

    That's possible and intended.

Hmm so I have the choice of using BT's service or Eircoms?

Any drawbacks to using BT on an Eircom enabled line? Can i take this modem anywhere in the country and connect or does it have to be BB enabled?

Also if i say went to a BB enabled line in cork and connected would it connect to the local exchange there?

    This is very odd :o

Yes, any bitstream DSL will allow you to connect to your sisters DSL account, as long as she doesn't cancel with BT.

Now, if she's already using it at home, then you might get issues. Not sure, if they are allowing more than one "session" per user.

However, if the phoneline isn't DSL enabled and has an active DSL account (any provider), then you won't be able connect with that either.

Speed depends on what was ordered on the phoneline though, not what the BT account is at.
