02 Mobile Broadband VS Smart Telecom?

    Hi all,

I'm currently with Smart Telecom however I'm having a few problems with them at the moment and after trialling out the 02 Mobile Broadband I have to say I'm quite impressed with it.

Currently I'm on a 4MB package with Smart for about ~E40 per month, and I see that I could get a 7MB package with 02 for around E15 per month.

I don't use the landline all that often so could live without that and cancelling it altogether.

Is 02 really broadband though? 7MB sounds great in theory...

Would I be mad to switch from a wired 4MB connection to a mobile 7MB one?

Just how good/bad is 02 really?

I'm a fairly heavy internet user (few hours 7 days per week) like to download movies, use YouYube etc... Is 02 a viable option for this sort of useage?

    Just how reliable is it?

Any info would be great guys, thanks!

It's absolutely NOT a 7Mbps package, but no connection or dialup speed and up to 7Mbps. If only 10 extra users in your area it can drop to under 200kbps or not connect.

If you need Mobile, get O2.

If you want Broadband, get Smart sorted out or consider UPC, IBB/Imagine Breeze or Digiweb Metro.

What ever performance you get now, is no insurance of performance in the future. No Mobile product from 3, O2, Meteor or Vodaphone is Broadband, nor can it be on existing GSM and 3G Licences.

Also check out Cap and charges for Over Cap on the mobile Packages.

    Yes.

In short, no. The cap is too low for any serious downloading and you can't guarantee the speed so streaming video tends to be choppy.

There is no comparison between 3G mobile and DSL. You'd eat through the 10GB cap in no time too, even with Youtube, if using it on a regular basis. The movie downloads will blitz it, and O2's fair use policy is not an open ended thing. They'll very quickly limit you strictly, and charge for over use.

Unless you need mobility, yes, absolutely crazy.

You'd be crazy to switch unless you really really really need the abiltiy to have internet access while your out and about
