Backwards compatibility is a massive deal. If it wasn't for the fact that I have a BC 60gb version, my PS3 would probably have been sold by now. Games like Persona 4, ICO, God of War II and FFXII have been enjoying more playtime in my PS3 that almost anything else – Valkyria Chronicles excluded.

Personally, I actually think that the lack of backwards compatibility led many gamers to upgrade from their PS2 to an Xbox 360 rather than the PS3. There was no incentive for these people to stick with the Playstation brand once they learned that the could no longer play their PS2 games on the new console so it came down to choice based on games available for the console and price – something that for most people the 360 won on both counts.

I was with everyone thought the 360 was just loud lump of a yoke, but jesus since I've been playing the ps3 more I've been finding that when the fans really kick in the sound is actually ridiculous if I'm playing at night I more or less 100% have to just turn it off.

Time to get the vacuum out so.Id a similar problem (posted it in the 1943 thread) with the fans kicking in after 15-20 mins or so playing time.Somone in that thread said to suck out the dust out of the grilles on the back and sides-and believe me there was some dust in there.
Now the fan doesnt kick in even after 2-3 hours playing time and the Ps3 is back to being as quiet as it was when I first took it out of the box.

It looks great and I would love one, If I didn't already own a 60gb PS3.
The backwards compatibility is an issue for some, and this may well be addressed with a firmware update later on.
But then, the BC matter is becoming less and less relevant as time marches on.
Many of the people Sony are trying to sell the PS3 Slim to are not PS2 owners, but Xbox 360 and Wii owners, or even new gamers completely.

The real point to be made is, whether you like the new look or not, this is the PS3 that most people will own.
Up to now the PS3 has had to compete with Wii and 360 but these rivals are going to fade as the sheer power of the PS3 is exploited and, certainly with the 360, the limitations of the rivals are shown.
The PS3 will have a life span of at least another 7 years, the next 3/4 of which may well see the most sales of the console.
So, like the DS phat and the original PSP, they will be something the early adopters bought and replaced in quick succession.

The only way I can see the PS3 Slim not owning the next 5 years is if the Xbox 360 Natal is as interesting as the E3 showing, that could change the game completely.

And, regarding the PS3 fan, the thing is almost silent compared to the hoover running inside my Xbox 360, now thats loud!

This thread is funny, i think the title should be changed to "let's just admit that Sony can't do anything right"

If you look at it it's pretty obvious. I mean the PS3 is announced and the response is "ZOMG it's sooo ugly and big". PS3 slim launches and the response is "ZOMG it's so ugly and small"

People complain at launch that the price is too high, and that sony bundled things people don't want and need, which raised the price and when the price is reduced then the complaints are that it's sooo terrible that sony rip us off removing the memory card readers and some usb ports in order to reduce the price.

People whine that backward compatibility is king and how cheated they feel that they can't play last gen titles on it yet complain about lack of anti aliasing and graphics not being "as next gen as the 360"

There is the old chesnut: "Microsoft didn't remove anything from the 360" to reduce the price but conveniently omitting that the 360 doesn't come with wi-fi, blu-ray etc and the add-ons for such functionality were hugely overpriced.

Wouldn't it just be easier to admit that Sony were hugely arrogant leading up to this Gen, treated Europe like shít and pretty much pissed everyone off so we all hate them now! That way we can conveniently forget that without their providing competition MS wouldn't have pushed so hard to make the 360 as good as it is (hardware quibbles notwithstanding)

The PS3 fan actually has 4 stages and which one it runs in depends on temperature obviously, hence why some people find the PS3 loud and other don't. Obviously how far back you sit from it is a factor too.

Stage1 - When you turn it on it defaults to this

Stage 2 - After a while it ramps up to this speed..usually after 10-15 minutes, and can happen when browsing the PSN or watching a BD. Pretty inaudible for people sitting 4 feet + away from the PS3.

Stage 3 - This is what most people experience when gaming for a few hours, when the temp exceeds 30 degrees. About the same as the current gen Xbox 360 idling in the dashboard. Noticeable but not loud.

Stage 4 - Rare enough. Used happen me when playing Uncharted. The fan got pretty noisy..almost hairdyer level. Noisier than 360 easily. However it never slowed down when I exited the game. Turned out to be a faulty temperature sensor. Can also happen if you have a lot of dust buildup. This is probably the level some people are experiencing here.

God I wouldn't even bother with the Slim alright, PS4 should be out just after Xmas by all accounts.

I'd like to think the PS3 will last another 7 alright!

I guess I just don't see why BC is such a big deal. My PS2 had a crap cd laser and stopped playing audio cds and PS1 games a long time before my actual ps1 went bust (ps1 had smaller loading times too).

Also there are 150m(ish) PS2s out there and I have to think that those people who buy a PS3 having never had a PS2 would be in the minority. In this case, why would BC be such a deciding factor if you can just use your old ps2? (I don't know for a fact but I wonder if the PS2 does a better job playing PS2 games than the PS3 does?)

After all that, a ps2 is only around 100e (prob less) and the optino always exists to have a non BC PS3 and a new PS2 side by side which, in my own individual opinion, is preferable to the all in one solution because it probably puts less overall strain on the PS3.

Now, my rant over although I will say the PS3 is warmer and noiser for non installed games (uncharted and COD4 are examples).

    New PS3

    - smaller ✔
    - quieter ✔
    - uses less power ✔
    - still plays games ✔

Anything else people are saying is just chaff tbh. Are those complaining about it's looks really saying that if they walked into a store they would still buy the louder, larger more power hungry version of it, for the same price, over the new one because "it's glossy"... "spiderman font, zomg"

I don't know about everyone else but I buy my consoles to play games.

Besides BC, who has any use for media cards or other OSs? How many people actually use them. I installed YDL myself, just to see what it was like. The USB ports can be upped if necessary with a hub.

I can't find the survey as I am at work but I read somewhere that the main reason people are not buying PS3's is the price. Taking away these, imo, superfluous extras allows them to lower it.

I use the card reader all the time to view the photos from my digital camera. I also like having four USB ports as it would be messy having to use a hub.

I don't have figures but IMO I think you are in the minority of people who actually use the card reader with any type of regularity. It is nice to have [I have a 60GB model myself] but purely from the "It has the capability" point-of-view.

As for a USB hub, most people don't use more than two ports anyway. I have four and use one for charging the controller and another for my Guitar Hero peripherals [they all plug into eachother and need just one port].

More importantly, its the stuff they have kept that means prospective buyers are getting a good deal; things like Blu-Ray [which they had to keep] a bigger HDD, Dualshock 3 controller, HDMI port etc.

I only have two ports. One has an external HDD in it and the other is used for charging the controller. I question if anybody really needs the 4 - just a luxury IMO. I mean on a PC it would be more understandable becasue USBs have more uses.

I've got to admit, I'm another person who thinks the slim version looks horrible! It looks cheap and tacky and the shape and finish look awful.

In fact it looks like some sort of 'gaming console' you'd pick up from ALDI for €29.99 rather than the beast of a machine it is. I know looks are unimportant compared with performance but at least the older PS3 looks decent, this just doesn't.

When it's out here in two weeks or so, im gonna trade in my phat for it.
A 40Gb(with sixaxis) trade in value in gamestop is €205

    So for €90 odd
I'll get a new smaller console
    A new warranty
    A new dualshock controller
    A more power efficient console
    A spare 120Gig HDD

Sounds like a win win to me.

    Pro's and cons:

+ A lot smaller lighter, quiter and has a nice new shape as well.
+ 120GB hard drive as standard (beats the hell out of Xbox's 256MB)
+ No external power adapter (a definate plus for some portability)
+ Up to €100 cheaper (about time, should of happen months ago)
+ New game and console offers (should happen with xmas coming up)
+ Other models are set to include 150GB or even 250GB versions.

    - Looks cheap (esp. the new logo and buttons to eject and power on)
    - I liked the Spiderman font (the new one looks like a cheap knock off)
    - Not enough shine (I love the original glossy black and the silver finish)
    - Doesn't stand out (if someone has a normal PS3, you can usually see)

    And last but not least:

    - It's devolving (lost USB ports, PS2 support, media cards and linux)

    Why Sony why?

    Your Con's are my Pro's!
The PS3 still makes me laugh when I see it. The shiny covering is tacky. The Spiderman logo is tacky. People generally don't want a gawdy console in their rooms. Another poster compared it to a boy racer car, which was a good analogy. I don't care for Linux as all I want to do is play games and watch some blu-ray on it.

I will now be buying a PS3 based on the price and changes. Ooohh I'm excited!! :D

I was in Gamestop today, and the price of the PS3 has been slashed, so anyone planning to trade in before the release of the PS3 Slim has been caught out.

As the above poster said, if you are an owner of a PS3 other than the 60gb then there are no disadvantages to the PS3 Slim, in fact only advantages, the cosmetic ones of course, but also the fact that you are getting a great Blu Ray player, an excellent games console with a growing library of good games and a general media player that is very capable, I have mine streaming media from a network server in another room, it's brilliant.
So, if I didn't use the backwards compatibility myself I would have been happy to trade in for the new unit.
And, once again, I think you could well have many Xbox 360 owners "trading up" to the PS3 Slim, not to mention the new Sony console taking over from the Wii and DSi as the must have console for Christmas.

Definitely. I've held off thinking about buying a PS3 for a long time solely on pricing reasons, but at 299 for a blu-ray player and games console (which would of course be the primary function of a PS3 with the likes of the Last Guardian or Uncharted 2 on the way) is a very attractive prospect for those who have been on the fence about buying one. And that is where the PS3 will probably be a sales success for Sony.

Yes, some user minorities are going to be upset. As I said, BC is an annoying loss in particular. But you're still getting a good value for money console, and I think Sony aren't going to be too concerned with losing what is sure to be a very small minority with their removal of alternate operating systems. Irritating for those who used those features, yeah, but Sony is nothing but a big corporation after all. They'll be aiming for sales at the end of the day, and to lose a small few users to the many new buyers they'll get when they release the Slim probably seems like a very small price for them to pay.

As L3mr0d said, it's a games console first and foremost, with the added benefit of a cheap but good Blu-Ray player. These are the unique selling points to millions of people, and the price of getting these features is far more important than looks or anything like that (I personally don't really care what a console looks like, as it long as it does what it is supposed to - although the original Xbox was an ugly bastard).

Actually I can't see many if any 360 owners trading up to the PS3 slim. They already have a console that equals od surpasses the PS3 for third party games. I'd say there will be 360 owners getting one for a cheap blu ray player though.

Aren't Nintendo and MS increasing the price of their systems in the UK? I would have thought that might affect us what with so many companies here that sell games hardware being UK owned. In the US the Elite is getting a price drop to $299 as well, not sure about the Arcade.

Wii sales have been slowing this year so I wouldn't be so sure that Nintendo won't give the Wii a price cut in the next 18 months. Although I'm not sure how significant Wii sales slowing is to Nintendo, seeing as they could hardly have maintained the crazy sales they had indefinitely. There are only so many people with electricity.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,518 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

They increased the price in the UK due to how badly sterling has dropped in value. MS really need to drop the price otherwise they could end up losing it this christmas. The playstation brand name is still powerful to the ignorant masses. I'm sure the Wii will sell way above the other two this christmas and nintendo seem to be set in stone about not needing to drop the price even if at this stage they could probably give the system away and still make money.

I'd be surprised, I doubt many of the people who went crazy for the ps2 slim (and that was one crazy xmas demand wise) cared about catelogues I am afraid. Anyways, I feel the exclusive tide has been turning for nearly a year now.

Is the 360 only increasing its basic price (and discontinuing the Premium) in the UK then? I thought it was everywhere.

Theres cheaper Blu-Ray players than the PS3 slim about by the way Retro - I reckon anyone who buys one now will have half an eye on games (at least).

Nintendo won't drop prices, I was working on a marketing thing with them and the wii is still selling like crazy.

I do think that the xbox needs a cut to stay competitive, the PS3 slim could well be the console for xmas if they get a couple of decent bundles for it

Come on Retro. Read it again!

"Those foolish peasants with their larger HDDS, Blu-Ray witchcraft, lower failure rate, better exclusives and free online - they will never know the sophisticated wonders of Gears of War!. Woot I dare say, W00t!!"

    It read something like that.

So I can't be negative about the PS3 without people jumping down my throat. It's got plenty to be negative about and this is a discussion forum.

And the masses are ignorant. It's why coldplay albums get to the top of the charts.

Which I didn't say, read it again. If you read into anything too much you'll eventually see what you are looking for even if it isn't even there.

I was just being vecisious and I thought my post was funny (I always do though). I guess you could be more specific than referring to the masses, the masses seem to have opted for 360s and Wiis so far this gen.

Well i think it's been the PS3's price up to this point that has been putting them off. 300 is a whole lot more reasonable and I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 is ahead of the 360 come January.
