I have a comp here which won't switch on, fans go and some lights on mobo come on aswell. The monitor says 'power save mode'. I switched it off several times with the mains switch with no result. Then the fourth time it just came on and never said 'windows didn't close properly' so I think that eventhough the lights come on it doesn't really start up.

It has a very cheap looking NorthQ PSU.

Can that still be a cpu?

Didn't explain that properly sorry, thanks for reply!

Check the wattage rating of the PSU against the wattage requirement of your GPU.

    Sounds like a self-build?

Nothing that taxing in there. Then again, NorthQ units aren't that good to begin with. Could easily be an issue with a dry solder in the PSU denying you access to some of the 12V output. Also try using a different power cable ("kettle cord") as those sometimes fail as well. Bear in mind that while it still may not be the PSU, NorthQs have a habit of violently detonating if pushed. They don't usually surge the system mercifully.

Thanks for that solitaire (again;)). I think I will just replace that one for a better cheap one. Any advise on which one to get?

Almost anything will do, so long as its from a reasonable OEM. Sad irony is that most other parts of the world are much better than Europe when it comes to budget PSUs - there are just so many off-colour cheapie PSUs on the market here :(

Anything with over 150W on the 12V rail(s) should do, so its what you find cheapest that doesn't suck in terms of quality or reliability. If you can find something cheaper than a CX400 that won't want to blow up eventually count yourself lucky. At least the good news is that the system's so light on power it'd probably be fine with a bargain-basement Fortron or Sirtec/Sirfa-built unit.
