problem setting up dual monitors

hi i want to set up 2 monitors on my pc to work independantly from each other, i hooked up the monitors using a vga splitter cable but when i go into display properties i dont have the option to extend my windows desktop, my pc is windows xp what do i need to get? i have a laptop with vista and that has the correct display…

You need two separate connectors on the back for the pc to know there's two there.
