Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What would be the main difference between these two types of oil?
In the book of the car it s says that I should use one of those two oils so which would be better for my car, by the way the car is Mazda 6 1.8l engine with 70k miles.
As well, in the terms of the oil usage which oil would be burned off more quickly 5w30 or 10w40??

The first number denotes how the oil flows at a cold temperature. Lower the number, the easier it flows when cold. Second number (after the W) denotes how the oil flows when hot (operating temperature). Larger the number, the better for some cases.

5w30 is better suited for cold weather. It is a lighter fluid, therefore having a lower viscosity than 10w40. To put it simply, 5w30 heats up quicker to reduce friction than 10w40. The less dense the oil, the less time it takes to begin circulating at lower temperatures.

The engine shouldn't burn off any ideally. If the engine is prone to burning oil the 10 40 will not be burned as quickly. Minimal difference though.

BMW recommends 5w30 for my car (320ci) but I found that it was burning off really quickly. I have switched to topping up with 10w40 to see if it makes any difference.

Use the thicker 10w40 if you are worried about oil consumption.

Thanks for all the replays :)
Engine uses only a small bit of oil every three or three and half thousands miles and in the book it says that I should use 5w30 or 10w40 oil. So that s way I was wondering would switching from 5w30 to 10w40 make any difference but I see now that, that would only be a minimal difference.
Thanks for clearing that up for me.
