Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I received the call last week and I still haven't got anything either but they did say it would be a few weeks for all the calls to go out. I am hoping next week. Fingers crossed.

Your intake will be a little different than most, as you're not immediately replacing a course, you guys will be starting off a new "chain" so to speak. I would imagine that your packs won't be out till they are sure that they have the numbers to make up a new squad for you guys (its still a possibility that they won't have enough people) but its more likely that they are just delaying it until close to the time, for the majority of us we only had a couple of weeks of waiting between getting the call and starting up - for you guys it's gonna be more like 2 months of waiting, hence why the delay in the packs coming out.

I'm sceptical if this is the case. It was stated to me and seemingly others that the packs would be out pretty soon, and it's likely just the anticipation is getting the bettter of us.

As for not having enough numbers, I would allay that fear. June was put back because there was not the numbers. It's important to remember that no calls were ever made ref a June or July intake so why wait until the allocated time to call people before the August intake? Getting it over and done with. I've been keeping an eye on the C16 threads and they seem to racing at times but I think there will be enough C15 people anyway. Of course, I can't say for certain but this isn't a concern for me. If we're thinking efficiently, making the August calls now would be wise before any C16 intake!

I once read a book- golden lesson? Why let it lie because it's not urgent?

They told me that the appointment pack, for this intake, would not be received as quickly as other intakes for that reason that they wanted to contact all those to be invited by phone first.

    Hi all,
I don't think I'll be a prime candidate for detective as I've only just found this thread - I've been monitoring the main one and wondering where everyone was :o

Well done to everyone who has been called.... I'll be seeing you there too!!!!!:D

Funny how I have no need for fibre whatsoever now mind you.....

So guys n gals, what's the general feeling? Do you think the recent round of calls marked the end of C15 recruitment, or do you think there might be another intake before C16 gets underway?

Somebody wrote on another tread that the C16 intakes will begin in October, so a September intake is still possible. Also, how many intakes have there been for C15? I am not sure even with the one upcoming in August that 440 people will have been recruited, if of course they are taking in the full amount that is.

Similar story myself, got the call a few months back and had to defer. At least the long wait until August gives us time to sort out all the things needed, especially for those of us who are not from Northern Ireland, such as opening a bank account and getting a national insurance number.

Exciting times ahead I think :)

So, did we all get our packs then?? :D

Its all incredibly real now.... Personally I'm excited, but as nervous as a vampire attending a french restaurant! Hows everyone else holding up?

Got mine yesterday and yea it finally seems real, and like u said a little scary, thinking having so long to wait is gonna be a bad thing, too much time to worry about it, would rather just get in and started!! Induction day sounds like an interesting (long) day!!

First long day of many I think! Yeah, once we're started we'll be grand. Just wish it wasn't so far away like yourself.

    Congrats!

Has anyone from outside the UK tried to get a National Insurance Number yet?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,451 ✭✭✭Delancey

I got mine years ago but I can tell you it is a lot more hassle than getting a P.P.S. ( R.S.I.) number in the Republic where you just fill in a form and post it off. In the UK you have to attend in person at an office , produce umpteen forms of I.D. and be prepared to answer a shedload of questions.

That said it is eminently doable and the process is designed to prevent people getting multiple numbers and thus making multiple Social Security claims - should not be a problem for anyone here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 55 ✭✭Adolphus

Thanks, gave them a call there and they said I will have to wait until I actually start to book the interview! Which, unless they work on Saturdays, will mean having to take a few hours off our training to attend.

    For those of you still waiting, I may have caught a glimpse of something that said when the intakes are for this year, I'm not going to post exact dates, but I'll post the months because I'm nice like that;

    August

    October

    December

Thats the remaining intakes for this year according to what I saw (the date for august mirrored what I already know from a mate of mine who got the august call).

    Still time folks, be patient!

i got mine there and sent it back. Im well excited. i have a super busy July already and trying to squeeze in some gym time and getting stuff of the shopping list..... im quiting work the week before the induction day.

    Alright folks

Looking forward to the Aug intake. I'm quitting my job this week and giving myself a good few weeks off before starting. I had planned to go on holiday later in the year but can't do that now what with the training starting. Recruitment told me if you miss 5 days or more then you're out.

Got my pack a few weeks ago so it's very real now.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Help & Feedback Category Moderators Posts: 9,810 CMod ✭✭✭✭Shield

Recruitment are dead right. You can't afford to miss any days in this one, because there will be no squad coming in behind you to back-squad you into should you get injured.

    Get reading!

I hadn't thought of that aspect - the fact there will be no squad to fall back in to. That'll add extra pressure for sure.

It somehow doesn't seem fair if others had that safety net and the Aug intake don't.

And as for 'get reading', what can you recommend? Looking forward to your garnerville thread

How many of us are still waiting? Especially as there are still spaces for the August intake!!

I wonder why we havent been called yet?

    Fingers crossed!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 57 ✭✭gazzabelfast

how do you know there is spaces left in the Aug intake?

i got my pack a few weeks back, well actually i got 2, they sent it to my old address even though i told them i changed address in Jan. Luckily there was no security risk as the people living in the old address are my closest friends.

Ive read my pack from cover to cover really excited about it, wish i was in a position to pack in my current job today but unfortunately ill probably have to work right up to the day before we start in G

Only found this forum recently and I'm wondering if anybody else is in the same boat as me, I hadn't heard anything for months until about 4 weeks ago I got my vetting forms followed by the date for my medical about a week later. Based on what I've read here this all usually happens months before the planned intake date, so is it true that august is the last intake for c15 is in august? Anybody else still waiting to pass the vetting and medical?

i didnt have quite as long as you to wait, i got my medical and vetting stuff in january and found out i had passed my medical 2 days later. vetting was cleared about 2 months after that.

i'm still waiting and it is looking like i have missed the boat until after the freeze is lifted.

I just got an email from a close friend who knows that I'm starting in Aug. He knows another guy starting as well and he heard through him (and therefore passed it on to me) that while the aug intake is still planned it could change at any time but they just don't know yet. Apparently anyone who has been offered a contract by now SHOULD be ok but not to take it as gospel.

Also he mentioned an awful lot of industrial tribunals could come off the back of this if they revoke the offers less than 4 weeks before the date of intake as people will have handed their notices in.

I don't know if he read it somewhere, rang them up or has some 'insider' but just passing it on.

I'm still putting my faith with PSNI in what he said about it.

...and you won't be disappointed. ;)

Do bear in mind that before I informed everybody on this thread, I also put in a little warning/disclaimer in post #1, and the reason I did that was because the organisation reserve the right to change its mind at any point in time, so the thread is to be read with that in mind.

Understandable. I don't think anyone who gets turned down at this stage will phone up and say "you have to hire me! Some guy on a forum told me you had to!"

I'm hoping the info my friend got was just recruitment covering their backs when they said it was likely but not 100%

....And I'll be taking it as gospel if I don't hear anything between now and 4 weeks from the intake date.

And something else that I forgot to add from my friend's email was that it said the august letters and phone calls went out much earlier than usual only because there was no June intake like normal. So anyone who has heard already for august might be thankful of that otherwise they'd maybe not have heard about it when the freeze announcement was made

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Help & Feedback Category Moderators Posts: 9,810 CMod ✭✭✭✭Shield

Yes but don't forget that letters and phone calls go out, but not everyone that commits over the phone follows through! Shamefully (and I know there are plenty of ex-Student Officers who will have their own stories to tell about this), people will agree to start, turn up for SID, get measured for the uniform, yada yada... and then either not turn up on Day 1, or leave in the middle of Day 1, that night while in bed, or some time during the first week.

...and that's how you blow £50,000 of tax-payer's money.

Its true, we lost 1 on SID day (guy didn't turn up), then another 2 on the first day (1 was a girl who didn't realise the PSNI worked shifts :s), and a few more in the first week who realised that maybe the job just wasn't for them. It happens!

Is there a minimum number of people for each intake? If they don't get 50, would it still go ahead?

Getting a bit nervous over this everything can change clause, would hate for someone to snatch my dream away at the last minute :(

How does someone leaving on the first day cost 50k?
Surely this is the cost of training and insurance over the course.
Ahh ..My mistake...eg:1,000,000 to train 20 recruits...one drops out...still costs about the same...dupit

I hope to god it goes through. I know they legislate for a few drop outs but if the numbers for Aug are already beow 50 and they're not allowed to ask anyone as of last Thurs then I hope our intake doesn't fold like a cheap deckchair

How FFS can someone go through the whole process and not know the job involved shift working ? it just beggars belief .... but then I have to say I have seen some disturbingly stupid questions asked by people a week or 2 before they start in GV.........I do sometimes wonder if some folks really want to be Police Officers cos they seem to know SF All about it.

For your amusement (and possibly to educate others) I've compiled the Top 10 reasons people have walked on Day 1:
    1. They didn't know it involved shift work
    2. They didn't know they had to carry a gun
    3. They didn't know they had to walk beat patrols
    4. They thought the uniform was optional: "Oh no it's ok, I want to do plain clothes work"
    5. They thought their car would be automatically modified with personal issue blues and twos.
    6. They thought they could transfer to America
    7. They thought there were performance-related bonuses
    8. They thought the job carried 'perks' like free admission to concerts with Access All Areas, etc
    9. They thought they'd be able to "fix" tickets and fines for their family, friends, and even themselves... which leads me on to number 10
    10. They thought being a police officer meant you had Diplomatic Immunity

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,451 ✭✭✭Delancey

I suppose I'm profoundly shocked and perhaps amused at those reasons , though if I didn't know you better psni I would have thought you were taking the p1ss.
It now explains why there is a tick box checklist with the application where you acknowledge the need for unsocial working hours , carrying a gun , possibly working with dogs and oh yes , goodness me the heavy burden of wearing a uniform.
What dissappoints me is these guys are getting into GV - call me an intellectual snob but anyone who thinks uniform is optional ....

Wow hold on a second here... Being a cop won't get me access to the dressing room at Jedward's next gig? I'm clearly wasting my time here

Where do these people live, it sounds like reality is on hold. Maybe we should all move there, bet we all get into alternative GV!

Ooh I like that one, gotta be my fav...my car would look sh1t hot with battenbergs and a light bar :D

Seriously though, shouldn't there be some sort of idiot filter in place early on in recruitment to stop these morons getting through and wasting a place that most of us would kill for!
How some people can go through the entire process to getting selected without finding out some of the fundamental basics of being a PSNI officer such as shifts, wearing uniform, carrying a gun, having to walk on the beat (dear god help us all...) is beyond me! I don't know about anyone else, but I research like a b1tch everything and anything I can!

I think I've just lost a little bit of faith in humanity
