Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Well, it'd have to be someone with premiership experience, a proven CL winner, someone outspoken, and someone who'll be available at the drop of a hat. The only person I can see to fit all those categories is Benitez.

    Any thoughts?

First off I don't think this deserves a thread of it own. Secondly I think Moyes has a great chance of replacing him. Also Mourinho is an obvious one. Would like to see him playing more attractive attacking football first though.

I think someone who has experience of managing Utd is vital so that means big Ron or the Doc (if he is still alive).

Would he leave his money? Presuming he is not fired by Xmas. City could be on a par with United in a couple of years. The thought of that:eek:

    imo Mourinho won't.

no matter wat he says to the contrary, he won't like the thought of following in such massive footsteps & he will never be given the appreciation that Ferguson was as Utd will be expected to continue being successful.

he'll manage City. where he'll be revered as a god if he wins anything major. that'll suit his ego perfectly.

Obvious choice is Mourinho, he's got the character, he's a winner, the only doubt is his style of football. He's probably the only one who could live up to Fergie's persona. Theres no doubt he misses English football, but the massive question mark is his style of play.

Other than that, its likely to be David Moyes. Could the history between Rooney and Moyes harm his chances?

An outside bet could be Martin O'Neill or Steve Bruce.

If anything something like Mourinho's ego is needed to replace SAF because the team will need immediate stability and the replacement will have to immediately show a high level of competence and Mourinho is the only person who can achieve that imo. I don't want him as long term manager but he'd be a brilliant stop gap

Are we talking about the same Mourinho here? He'll absolutely love following in Fergies footsteps and whatsmore he will think himself well capable of doing a job at Old Trafford. The guys confidence knows no bounds.

It shouldn't be an "old boy". The Liverpool experience with Old Boys is mixed, with emphasis on the downside.

But we dont want to end up like Chelsea with a new manager every year. No offence to Chelsea but it only upsets the team

    Correct.

I would argue Mourinho would be the only candidate qualified for the job.

Totally agree , also cannot see him liking the thought of Fergie been still at the club (Board)

It shouldn't be an "old boy" just for the sake of it but if the "old boy" is qualified to do the job and is the outstanding candidate then of course he should get the job.

One from Moyes, Mourinho or Darren Ferguson, if you ask me.

There are no Old Boys currently qualified for the job.

    Robson
    Keane
    Hughes
    Bruce
    Strachan

Non of the above would cut it

Possibly. United always have a history of playing the right way, and Fergie has said this many times. He is obviously going to influence the decision.

Personally, I'd go for Mourinho regardless. It needs a massive character to take over and he is the only one who could fill that role IMO. He's a winner and thats exactly what we need when Fergie goes. If we don't get success soon after he leaves, I worry for us.

Mourinho and his ego would love the challenge of being the man of keeping United successful.

Laurent Blanc (arguably an Old Boy...depends on what you class them as) is an interesting one imo. Doing well for himself so far.

At the moment they wouldn't. But Fergies departure could be two years away yet! Who knows what they'll have achieved by then. Three of those lads on your list have the potential to improve.

Blanc? No experience managing in England, limited CL experience. Another possible candidate, but he should be well down the pecking order.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,432 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

Well when you look at what Bruce has done at all of his clubs so far he will be considered imo. Bordeaux are in the CL this season and have made great strides so we'll see if they can upset any of the big guns. Blanc looks to be a top manager. Solskjaer could be a dark horse.

Sure just give it to Mike Phelan, purely for the reaction of other United fans ;)

He'll get the CL experience this season, and so what if he has no experience managing in England. Mourinho didn't when he arrived at chelsea, Ancelotti doesn't have any. Wenger didn't have any when he arrived. I don't think United should be limiting themselves to premiership managers.
