I'm just writing a report and in it im doing a page on who the providers and resellers are in Ireland

Am I right in assuming that everyone except Eircom is a reseller of some kind. BT resell eircoms bitstream dsl, ICE resell BT fibre to make their backhaul network, Digiweb lease BT and ESBT fibre for their network etc.

BT, Smart, Magnet operate LLU which wouldn't be resold Eircom Wholesale products??

Well, a provider owns and operates their own infrastructure, whereas a Reseller sells a branded "version" of a providers product.

eg: Eircom have a DSL network, on which they offer a bitstream service. Other providers can resell access on the Eircom bitstream service.
But a Reseller doesn't manage the Eircom DSL network.

Whereas Smart may use the services of BT for fibre connectivity between their POPs, but its still Smart's network, and they still manage it.

It's also worth bearing in mind that ICE Et al are probably just using BT's fiber links to get data routers from their Rack in a data center to their transmission equipment, thats hardly reselling BT fiber

This could turn into something very philosophical!!
Resellers will sell a version of a telco's products whereas a provider typically has their own active equipment. BT, UPC, Smart, C&W, Verizon etc have all done fibre swaps at some point in time but don't resell a service it was purely to avail of cheap fibre or capacity as it makes economic sense.

Technically as eircom use global service providers to get to the US and europe you could say they're reselling Cogent, Global crossing etc's Internet product.

    Could get very confusing!

Also even BT, Smart, Digiweb & Magnet who are providers and have LLU or wireless will also resell eircom DSL where they don't have their own equipment so they both resell and provide.

Is it a short or long paper you want to write :D
