We had a man who had lost everything in Hurricane Katrina, had just managed to build another house, only to lose it in Gustav. Plenty of people moaning about being forced off to I-raq in the morning - felt very bad for them. My favourite of all was the woman who started a conversation with the amazing phrase - "Don't you just hate it when you have to go to jail." Plenty of drunks and junkie types too.

Greyhound staff tend to be extremely rude. Make sure you turn up well ahead of schedule to get on the bus as the queues can be massive and even if you have a ticket there's no guarantee you will get on. Also don't expect decent customer service if there is a problem - we got thrown out of the bus station for daring to question the authority of the woman who was organising the queue.

What you should do is go on www.megabus.com. If you book ahead of time, you can go for $6-10 each way.
