Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Scooter - must wear a helmet?

Call me stupid, but I've only ever ridden scooters in Far Eastern countries. Over there, it's quite acceptable to ride a 50cc (or bigger) scooter without a helmet.

What about in Ireland? Is it a legal requirement to wear a helmet here, when riding a 50cc (or electric) scooter?

I've googled but haven't found an answer.

Yes, it is a legal requirement.

If you like your brain on the inside I'd highly recommend you keep your helmet on when driving on two wheels no matter what the country.

Where abouts in Waterford are ya????

If your getting a lid go to Marcus docherty on mayors walk, he cheaper than Hilton's place on the cork road. Although I imagine Hilton has a better selection of lids.

yeah thats the chap. I got a Nitro something or other there a few months back. Was only €120. Fairly good helmet. Not as noisy as the Arai I have. Comfortable etc etc.

Thanks man. To be honest, wasn't expecting €120 though! Is that the going rate for a bog standard helmet for someone on a 50cc moped?

Doesnt matter if your on a busa or a scooter. A knock to the head is a dodgy hobbie. You can get cheaper than that if you want. Think he has one or two for about 80.
some people will say spend as much as ya can on a lid 500< cos its yer head. Personally I just go by the fact they had to pass safety standards before they could be sold. The Arai I have was fairly privey but compared to the nitro I have, its shoite.

Why would you spend less on a helmet just because you drive a scooter. Is your head worth less than mine or Seany's ??

Spend as much as you can. Don't put a price on your life.

Well, no, but the electric scooter in question only goes as fast as 45km/hr - and that's only a theoretical maximum. In practice I don't think I'll be going much faster than a push bike.

Understood, thanks for the advice. :)

    That's nice of you.

But remember, a helmet that doesn't fit perfectly will do you little good in a crash.

If you are buying a new helmet, it should feel tight, but not enough to cause headaches. Within a few days it will soften up, and mold itself to the shape of your head/face and thus become more comfortable.

When you get it, a new helmet should be tight to the point of being uncomfortable then after a few days it will begin shaping to your head and will soon fit like a glove ;)

Marlin that's really nice of you - thanks a million! I'm waiting on the scooter being delivered, if indeed it will be delivered (but I think that's something only Expansys understands). Anyway, I'll drop you a PM as and when, if that's cool with you! Thanks again.

Thanks also to the other posters for their advice. :)

Listen to Seany - He's been biking for ages and he's still able to string together coherent sentences, so he's doing something right.

Did you get a decent quote on insurance for the electric scooter? What sort of range is it supposed to have?

Aon quoted me €261 for TP. €300+ for fully comp (can't remember exactly how much). Will be going with TP anyway.

I posted another thread on it, here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055651646

Supposed to be able to go 40 miles per charge, with a maximum speed of 50km/h.
