I've been wanting to play this awesome game in years, but I can't because my old version is only compatible with windows 95 and 98 dos. Does anybody know if it has since been re-released for both windows XP and Vista?

The version on steam says that it's compatible with Windows 2000/XP/Vista.

I just want to know is Quake on steam a new version that is designed for Windows Xp and Vista, and not the old dos version from 1996? I just don't want to waste €10 downloading this game only to find out that it's the old dos version and just won't run. Has anybody actually downloaded this game, on a Windows XP or Vista machine and played it yet? Sorry but I just want to be sure.

Did you try running it in compatibility mode, I have it working fine in Vista 64 bit.

I think I tried that before, but I had no luck. I'm really more interested to know if that version of Quake on Steam is a new version that is designed for both Windows XP and Vista, and not the old dos version. I know it says on Steam that it needs a 2000/XP/Vista-compatible computer system, but I just want to be 100% sure before I pay the 10 euro to download it.

I know it's an old thread but if you haven't got sorted yet, what you need to do is download the nquake package from www.nquake.com, that's compatible with your xp and vista. Then all you need is the pak1.pak file from the original quake cd. It's a completely new game now with regular updates and a much faster pace than it used to be. Still enough people playing it online with regular leagues and tourneys.

Thanks for this, but it looks like it might just be multiplayer only. Is it also single player? In all honesty I can't be bothered with multiplayer games, and I just want tp play Quake in old fashioned single player mode. The updated graphics would also be nice as well.

It's got the whole lot, you can play single player normal game or against bots too if you want.

No it's the original Quake he's talking about. Quakeworld is what's being used now as it's open source and upgraded practically nightly especially for Internet play.

There are a couple of Irish ones but nobody ever uses them, besides you get 25 ping to the UK and under 40 to Holland. Just use this link to see the servers with people currently playing:

The first and the best imo. Had such a creepy atmosphere and the music kicked ass too. I credit this to two respective genii, romero and reznor. ID really lost their appeal after Romero left because he designed incredibly imaginative levels which incorporated a variety of different styles which most game designers wouldn't be bold enough to intermix.
