Hi - weighing up whether to erect my own stable at home or use livery through winter.

What are the base costs for feeding haylage and bedding (wood chip, pellets or similar) for a large horse 16-17hh per week in moderate work (assuming no grazing thru winter)?

    thx

I home stable for 1 horse and I've kept a record of costs for the last few years.
    So here's a typical year.......
Hay 150 small square bales at €3 each. 3/4 a bale for 24 hours. Stable 8-10 hours over night and turned out in a winter rug on grass.
    Shoes every 8-10 weeks
    Worming every 3 months.
    Annual flu&tetanus vaccination by vet.
Wood Shavings (€9.50 a bale) would have used 2 bales a week but installed stable mats last year and only need 1/2 a bale a week now.

Total approx €1000 per year. If horse needs vet for cuts or cough then those costs are extra. Be prepared to commit 100% in all weathers if you stable at home, savings are good but it also means organising a friend/neighbour to check on your horse if you want a weekend away. Not a problem usually. :)
