How I wish we had a proper right winger. How many times did Kuyt get the ball out wide, and just not know what to do, not have the confidence / ability to take on the defender - Johnson stayed too far back for far too long in the second half.

Nando wasn't exactly on fir either - looked uncomfortable with the ball at his feet - maybe it was the knock the other day?

Insua is a talented little ****er, I don't know why people don't realise this.

Liverpool struggled again today in midfield against a half decent midfield, just as they did in the first match. I don't think anyone would argue against the fact that Liverpool right now have struggled in 2 of 3 games in midfield, against teams that would be in the top 8. Sure they beat Stoke, but if this trend continues, they'll really struggle for even 4th.

Gona be interesting to see what Rafa does, he needs to address this midfield problem big time:
Can he get the best out of Lucas?
    Does he drop Gerrard back?
Does he, or can he, go into the transfer market?

Well done Villa, best team by a mile.

Poor poor performance by the Liverpool team, no creativity in the middle.

A big big blow to Liverpool's title hopes this season. Full credit to Villa though, they deserved it.

    Agreed

Jaysus, that was painful to watch. Terrible result showing up yet again what a weak squad we have.

Already saying goodbye to the league title on 24th August :(

Villa to win tonight, underdogs tag is what suits us best. Whatever else we can say about MON, we know that him and the team are under no pressure to win tonight. keep it tight til half time, let the crowd get frustrated and get a jammy goal and sit on it. Spurs made this lot look ordinary and got a result against them and if they can do it so can Villa.

Sometimes you just gotta have a little faith and think positive

Ah well, one of those days. Stick the ball in the net early doors and it's a different game. It happens. Early days.

If they get injuries Liverpool will be crippled, especially up front.

Just look at the strikers at the big PL clubs:

Man Utd: Rooney, Berbatov, Owen, Welbeck, Macheda

Arsenal: Van Persie, Bentdner, Eduardo, Vela, Wilshere,

Chelsea: Drogba, Anelka, Di Santo, Schevchenko (lol)

Man City: Adebayor, Tevez, Robinho, Santa Cruz, Bellamy, Benjani

    Tottenham: Defoe, Keane, Crouch, Palyuchenko

    Liverpool: Torres, Kuyt, Voronin, N'Gog

Delighted for Villa, a deserved victory. A tactical master-stroke putting Young on the left, restricting Johnson's attacking.:pac:

Paddy Power to suspend betting on Benitez being sacked again?

Six points dropped in the first 3 games without meeting Arsenal United or Chelsea is a very poor start. It's much to early to rule liverpool out of the title chase but it's not going to be easy to overcome those setbacks.

Babel - not exactly an impact player.

Is that not pretty much all he is? Tbh i thought Babel did alright when he came on.

Well done Villa, yee deserved it on the night, very disappointed with the pool performance, made it too easy for yee.

In fairness, listing those players doesn't really back up your point. Welbeck, Macheda?? Vela, Wilshire? Di Santo, Schevchenko? Bellamy, Benjani, Santa Cruz??

With the exception of Spurs (amazingly!) - there's feck all difference with the quality up front. Apart from maybe United / City who can boast 3 top class forwards.

    FYP ;)

I've said it before and I'll say it again - how can people defend Lucas when he can perform like tonight?? It amazes me.

How many more 'Brucie moments' does he have to have before more of his defenders realise he's sh1te? Seriously. He is not up to the standard of Lierpool FC. Same can be said for Babel, and to an extent Voronin (though you're not gonna get much better willing to sit on a bench 90% of the time).

How I wish we had a decent right winger too (no offence to Kuyt - he works hard), someone who know how to take on a full back, get behind the defence, make something happen. Ugh, tonights match bored me.

Yay, Liverpool have all of the ball for the second half - but dont't bloody well know what to do with it in the final third.

    :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Do you know what makes this worse??? My Boss is a Villa fan!!!!

Grr - fair play to them though.

No club has won the Premiership following an opening day defeat. It's a terrible start, no doubt. But it is literally just the start. Easy to forget that.

We look all at sea without Alonso - as cliched as it is to say it.

You would swear we sold half a team.

I know but they have now lost the same amount of games as they did in the whole of last season and Arsenal , Chelsea and Tottenham all look stronger than last year. Liverpool need to go on an incredible winning run to stay in the race imo.

utd has twice, 1995 they lost the opening game to villa 3-1, 1992 utd lost their opening 2 games and drew the third and still won the league

having said that liverpool won't win the league this year

I was trying to compare the depth of the squads of the top PL clubs, which Liverpool should be matching and which at the moment, I don't think they are tbh.

I see your point but I put this to you:

If Torres get injured, Liverpool can bring in Kuyt, Voronin and N'Gog.
Of those three, Kuyt is the only player of proven quality.

If Rooney gets injured, MU can bring in Berba or Owen, who are both proven quality players.

    And so on..

    incorrect.

United were hammered by Villa on the opening day in 95/96, Hansen said you'd never win anything with kids, and we won the double that season.

What are Raffa's biggest flaws in your opinion?

1.Stubborness - the continuing sticking by below standard players Lucas / Voronin

the obvious replacement in Alonsos position is Stevie G however Benitez seems to know better than everyone else

    2. Transfer market - sold strikers and never replace them, bought replacement for Alonso who is out injured for 6-8 weeks..... league cannot be won in that time but can certainly be lost
