No one deserves to die because they are begging to make a few quid, but the romas take it too far ffs.Today sitting at a red light a young roma girl walked up to my window and handed me a photocopy card and walked off.
On the card was a picture of a young child in a hospital bed with tubes and wires everywhere. On the flip side of the card,it wrote, Jesus help,if you have any pity in your heart you will give as much money as you can to halp this poor child dying of cancer...blah blah blah.As i finished reading the roma girl came back and said, i take money now:eek:.This is ignorance at its worst. If i (as an irish person)did this id get jail and my pic in every national paper.

    > Stabbings common place
    > Attacks on people in Dublin now a common occurance (or Salthill)
    > Drugs freely available
    > Govt led by thieving B******'s
    > Rates on the way up
    > Water charges / property taxes being tabled
    > Illegal check-points in the North
    > Filth on the streets - including those illegal posters
    > Dumped cars in my area & attempted break-ins of neighbours
    > Healthcare down the toilet
    > Ineptitude of the Govt / civil service to do anything about the rake of things wrong
    > Criminals being released early & being given too short sentences
    > Dole for nothing - believe the dole is a great idea - but why are the govt not doing more - ie get these guys to work on public improvement schemes 3 days a week; 1 day spent on CV/Interview skils and 1 day for whatever (I was prev unemployed for 9 mts - so thank gawd for FAS).

OP, I contend that you're the problem. You read tabloids, believe them and tell others about the lies. Are you nuts or just naive?

Really bloody irritates me when people fall for their little scams. There's a lad outside Tesco in Drumcondra between the entrance and the car park (so lots of people have to walk by him - women and old people from the local estate mostly) and I see him cycling down the road with his backpack on, going 'to work' I guess you could call it. Just sits there all day, and he's obviously making something from it because he's been there for months.

On topic, YEAH RIGHT that woman looked for a job. Unless the objective was to rob the place blind.

If anyone went to Romania, or any other country for that matter looking for work and couldn't find any - they'd bloody go home.

    Umm...

The woman sent Irish cash she scrounged off people home for her family's education.

    No, she was sending Euros.

she was initially working and had accommodation, only resorted to begging when she could no longer support herself and was living rough.

At least she was trying to do something positive witht eh money recieved, unlike all those fine upstanding irish junkies at cash points around the city.

I dont feel sympathy for these Roma Gypsies at all, which she clearly was btw.

the two sentences aren't mutually exclusive. they are appealing for any information for the public who might know who she had been staying with or getting food from. She wasn't Roma so while the Gardai might have seen her about they might not have immediately caught their attention (as some beggars do) or she was smart enough to move when she saw Gardai rather than wait around for them to move her on.

She was definately a roma..ordinary romanians dont beg as a rule..and she looked like a roma..

The report also says she was back and forth between ireland and romania..a normal romanian wouldnt go on multiple begging-holidays like that.

Absolutely. There are large numbers of homeless Irish there. Its worth remembering that we have our own people heading abroad to beg and live rough. Its a very sad situation all-round. Anyone who thinks that begging and being homeless is a cosy existence needs their heads examined. Its an awful situation to be in and demostrates how messed up our society can be.

The poster I was responding to seems to be under the impression that Romas were the only group of being that travelled abroad to beg on the streets. He was wrong.

this was one person, you've still to prove she was roma, you're only saying "she looked like a roma" or "normal romanians don't do that"

this is the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman logical fallacy.

I see. Its okay to go abroad to beg so long as you don't travel that far. Thanks for clearing that up.

I don't think that anyone believes that beging is an easy life. All over Europe Roma gangs force other Roma to beg. The government should put a stop to this by either cracking down on begging or only allowing irish people to beg. If begging is not illegal then it should at least be regulated.

Oh don't be so flippant. Irish people have close links with London and it's not inconceivable that someone could have fallen on hard times over there. I guarantee not one Irish person went to england "cause the people are suckers and they can beg more cash from them".

In actual fact a lot of people lived there in the 80's and early 90's because the dole was much better than over here, there was a big squatting scene and drugs were far more easy to obtain t han over here...it was(and probably still is) a vagrant's paradise.

+ 1. Irish people 'scrounged off the British taxpayer fro years. Of course two rights do not make a right. But its worth remembering.

Have to say this thread marks a low for me. I'll definitely be looking at some of the posters in a new light after this.

The worst thing she was guilty of was begging or being here on the sly. We're talking about a woman who was stabbed to death by some nutter in some godforsaken corner of a dark park for fucks sake.

Jokes I honestly don't mind, but to actually infer that ethnicity/begging and a violent death should be somehow concomitant... :(

Yep..because he dindt ASK anybody for anything,he was doing a bit of scrounging for ciggies NOT begging for money and he certainly wasnt holding up a baby, trying to distract my at an ATM or pickpocketing.
As i said in t hat thread,he didnt look like a down and out so its probably safe to assume he'd contributed to the country for many years.
What, exactly to roma contribute, except bringing thier children up to be thieves?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,221 ✭✭✭✭m5ex9oqjawdg2i

I don't like begging, but there is no way anybody deserves to die for it. Be that person black, white, yellow or where that person is from. Serial rapists and murderers don't get the death penalty, why should a begger?

Maybe her kids are challenged and are still in the Romanian version of senior infants? :p

When my dad was in second class, there was an eighteen year old in his class. Didn't have the same special needs help they do now.

And speaking of "grown-up children in their 20s" ... My parents still give me money for my education! :(

Now, what criteria do you apply when deciding - based on visual evidence - who is or is not a Roma.
