Ugh, that sucks. :( Perhaps you could stay at a friends house for the night? Alternatively, you should probably get yourself to A&E if your ankle gets any worse.

It's still ok to walk on, it's just a bit painful. Definitely not broken, but the way I landed on it I'm very lucky that it's not. I did'nt fall, but my foot just went from under me and I landed heavily on my ankle, pretty painful.

I only have one friend living in the city center, but hopefully I'll be able to find some alternative option.

I came in from Frankfield (it took me 2 hours to get in, and normally takes 30 mins), and risked my neck on the footpaths, absolutely shocking condition.

Nothing has been treated, not the streets in town, Western Road, or the college itself, so you take your life into your hands going anywhere. I slipped earlier and am pretty sure I sprained my ankle, I'm limping around the place. I don't see how I'm going to get home, no busses are running, the roads are too bad to get a lift, and I live on top of a hill.

And the reason why I took so much trouble to come in, is I have a really important lecture at 4. I got a text to say it was cancelled, just as I was coming down Western Road. :(

Wow,That is really unlucky! And it has to be said UCC made a bad choice opening today and worse still,People on the college road SU facebook group were quoting from an "Offical UCC Statement" saying the campus had been gritted..

If that's the case anybody who hurts them selves today would be highly pi$$sed off...Like you I'd imagine.

Sorry to hear it Nova_era. Taxi no go either?

I doubt you're the only one who's been hurt. Someone on the SU Facebook page said her friend dislocated her shoulder.

Disaster of an idea leaving college open.

Glad I didn't go in today and sorry for all the people who got hurt :( nice excuse for handing in essays late though :D

Love how UCC decided to keep the place open and it took students and staff(non-grounds keeping) to actually clear the thick slush/ice on the grounds which actualy dint seem to start till about 2. The amount of times i slipped on the way down there this morning was unreal. Loads of people from my class sent on emails and letters to the SU and the registrars office.

Who would be the best people to e-mail my anger towards?

The SU are meant to look after students, surely they could have campaigned on behalf of students that opening up today would be unsafe and unnessesary?

I'm home now, managed to get the bus to Douglas and walk/skate the rest of the way, fell once but was able to stay semi-upright by putting my hands on the road. Disaster though, my ankle is swollen and I didn't get any work done. :(

Glad to be home though, I'll probably end up going in tomorrow too, too much work to be doing. :)

Thanks for the good words! :)

It's hard work organising snowball fights in front of the President's office Rory. They have to earn their wages remember.

Not only did that guy from the SU take the adult and worthwhile decision of trying to organise a snowball fight, but in doing so he actively encouraged people to make the trip to UCC today. I admit that anyone with half a braincell would not come into UCC to partake in a ****ing snowball fight, but how can the SU get away with claiming that they were unable to get a closure today, when a member is trying to get people in to throw snowballs at each other?!

Sorry if that rant makes no sense, I'm angry!

And also, I walked past the presidents garden at 5 past 1, and didn't see a single snowball. This guy wants to be the SU president, and he can't even organise a snowball fight?? I'll be voting for him alright. :/

Tbh I fancied walking over to ucc today just to get a go at the snowballing. :rolleyes:The worst thing is that they wonder why the students are retaliating against them. It's a joke.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,863 ✭✭✭Papa_Lazarou

Sorry about the late reply Nova but the ultimate decision of keeping UCC open is down to the building and estates office. I know the name of the guy who's in charge of it but id prefer to not name him on a public forum tbh. They have a section on the UCC website so you should be able to get a phone number of email address from there.

Also i must say that from a large number of the comments on here it seems like people have a serious vendetta against UCC SU as a whole. Yeah i understand how people are annoyed at just one of them organising a snowbaqll fight but that was just a stupid move on that guys own part imho. I have never expected much from a students union but i must say that since the floods ive actualy gained a bit of respect for those involved with it. They went way beyond the call of their positions with the floods and without them many people would have been close to homeless for a week or two. The students union don't have any real power no matter how much we would like them to. From UCC's point of view its just something to keep us "happy". The SU struggle to get UCC to allow them get involved with college decisions and i dont see how in any way possible getting them to send out an email telling students not to come would help that situation in any way. The SU could have pressed more for students to vent their anger at the decision to keep it open but in the end they are powerless to actualy shut the college. Im not a huge fan of SU's but at least i can recognise when they are actually at fault and when they are not.

On a totally serious note, you should send UCC the doctors bill. They are responsible for your injury. You hurt your ankle after the college authorities told students it was ''safe'' to come to college. But it was not. Therefore by default they have to take responsibility for any injuries caused to people who only travelled on their advice.

It closed at 8pm last night, but the BooleBasement computer centre was open until 22:30.

They closed it 2 hours early last night because of the rain.

This is a god awful film btw. Being surrounding by a load of communists might make watching it more entertaining mind. :p

Is it me or are the computers in the library way faster at the moment??

That was a rubbish excuse IMO, I left at 6 or so and the rain wasn't bad at all in comparision with what fell earlier. Perhaps they didn't want staff or students getting caught up in weather but I've seen the library open later under poorer conditions!

Really? We were thinking of showing Part two in two weeks but if its that bad I'd be tempted to show The Motorcycle Diaries - excellent film!

Ya i agree with Papa Lazarazou. The 2nd one is when he tries to bring socialism to Bolivia and its just overly long and boring

i think they call it 'institutionalised' :) There is a very fast flowing stream of water running down donovans road. Another two days of this rain and it will be the floods part two.

I think they were updating the system a month or so back. Might be a few kinks in it. One of my friends got an emaill from UCC saying she owed international students fees despite being from Kerry!

I'm just looking up student accomodation in Vienna; this erasmus year is starting to become real, and frankly quite frightening!
