Ive applied for a Vacant place for DKIT, and im wondering, when does the year start in DKIT? is it this coming monday or the 14th or what? Also, when will I get registered, as im only applying for a vacant list? Do you get a student card in DKIT?

Classes actually start next Tuesday the 8th.

The only way to know when you'll be registered is to ring the college, it could be anytime.

Yeh you'll get a student number and card when your registered

When I was in Mulitmedia there was a few people who were only offered vacant places about a week and a half into the course.

I'm sure you won't miss anything really bar introductions and lecturers telling you what each module is about. That stuff is important but just do what draffodx said and ring the college to find out when you can register. Do it on Monday morning.

The course I applied for was Bachelor Of Science in Computing, but a few questions; It says theres 120 places, how is that done? Is the 120 people split into a good few classes or what?

Also, is there much to do in DKIT? is there a gym, sports pitches, social rooms etc.

How far is DKIT from the Dundalk city centre, and is Dundalk a city even? is there many shops and much to do in it?

That's the course I'm gonna be doing. :)

It's 120 places but in second year you specialise in one of the three options:

    Software Development
    Applications and Support
    Networking and Support

1st year is a general year that everyone does which incorporates all three sections AFAIK.

There's loads to do in DKIT. There's a gym. It's cheap enough for the year. I'm not sure of the exact price but it's not too expensive. There's also sports pitches where you can play soccer and GAA etc. There's also a sports hall (MPC) in the college which caters for indoor football, basketball etc.

There was also a common room opened about two years ago where there's a few computers, snack bar and pool tables. Always busy though.

DKIT isn't too far from the actual town. Walking it's about 15-20 minutes... depending on how fast you're walking.
There's also a town bus service which operates right outside the college near the Mace shop and buses are very frequent and they let you off right in the centre of town.

The town is a little bit of a maze to newcomers. A lot of side streets etc and at first is a little difficult to navigate around but gets easier after a while.

No what I was wondering was, that it says there's 120 places, but other courses in other IT's say like 40 places, but does this mean that there will be 120 people like in a big auditorium with one lecturer talking through speakers? Or will it be broken up into a few groups? Basically, are all 120 people going to have lessons in the same exact room?

Also, so its a town then? is there a good variety of shops and services and all that? Like is there many music, game, clothes shops etc.? Any towns you can compare it to in terms of size? Have you ever been to say Waterford? Is it as big as that city centre if you've been there?

Also, is there a train station near DKIT? Does this run too Huesten in Dublin if so?

One more thing, is there many societies and clubs in DKIT? Like is there music, game, computer, sports clubs?

Cheers for the help. Hope I get this course, looks good, plus I like the fact that DKIT is fairly close to Dublin City centre.:) I've been told its only about 45 min bus ride approx from it.

I wouldn't say it'll always be 120 people in the same room tbh. When I did multimedia the year was split into three timetables. One group would have certain classes at one time and the other groups would have the same class at another time. They do this because there's not always enough room to cater for such a large number of people. There were times when everyone was in the same lecture. Everyone does the same classes but just not at the same time.
Also, so its a town then? is there a good variety of shops and services and all that? Like is there many music, game, clothes shops etc.? Any towns you can compare it to in terms of size? Have you ever been to say Waterford? Is it as big as that city centre if you've been there?

There's a decent variety of shops and supermarkets around the place. The Marshes shopping centre has shops like River Island, HMV, Subway, Game Stop and a cinema beside the Long Walk Shopping Centre. It's not the biggest town but it has a good range of services available. I'm not sure what town I'd compare the size to but maybe just slightly bigger than Longford town. Or maybe even Naas.
Also, is there a train station near DKIT? Does this run too Huesten in Dublin if so?

The train station is in the town but doesn't run to Heuston Station. The final stop is Connolly Station and you'd have to get a connecting train to Heuston.
One more thing, is there many societies and clubs in DKIT? Like is there music, game, computer, sports clubs?

There's a ton of clubs and soc's in DKIT. There's a dedicated day for clubs and soc's which takes place in the second or third week of college I think. There's a load of various clubs to get involved in. Some clubs and soc's will have demonstrations for you to try your hand at some things. For example archery had a few of its members letting people try it out.

Some clubs and soc's require a small fee to run so on registering for a club or soc you may be required to pay some money to join. There's a ton of clubs and soc's so look around and take your pick.
Cheers for the help. Hope I get this course, looks good, plus I like the fact that DKIT is fairly close to Dublin City centre.:) I've been told its only about 45 min bus ride approx from it.

When did you apply for the course if you don't mind me asking?

There's two bus companies that run to Dundalk from Dublin every day.

Matthews (www.matthews.ie) and Bus Eireann (www.buseireann.ie)

I'd recommend the Matthews bus moreso. It is cheaper and quicker than the Bus Eireann "Express" bus.

The Matthews bus leaves Parnell Street and stops at Drumcondra, outside St. Pats, Whitehall and then Dundalk. There's a direct bus and a non direct bus to Dundalk with Matthews. The non direct bus takes longer as it stops off in Drogheda along the way.

The direct one just flies up the M1 and takes about an hour.

It's €50 for a ten journey ticket i.e a weekly ticket which is pretty decent.

The Bus Eireann bus departs from Wilton Terrace and from Eden Quay and always stops off at the Airport and Drogheda before arriving at Dundalk. It's unreliable sometimes in that it sometimes doesn't show up on time.

I think it's about €14 for a return and the journey takes about 90 minutes.

am in the final year of that course (computer apps & support) - Bachelor Of Science in Computing

First of all, there is never 120 people registered. I think at the very start there was about 65 in my year and that has been chopped by over 50% (probably more) over the years (high drop out rate).

We had all of our lectures in the same room. The lecture rooms can barely fit 65 people in, so i'm not sure what the story is if, for example, 120 people did happen to register.

Anyway, apart from week 1, it's highly unlikely there'll be a 100% attendance rate all the time ;)

We were broken in to 3 groups for tutorials / practicals (about 20 in each) but as far as i remember you could pick or get moved to be with friends etc...

Dundalk is no Waterford (size wise), but it has sprawled over the last few years...

the timetable here shows the schedule for one group of the first year.

K172 and K173 are the other groups, you could be in any of the groups and the timetable will vary slightly.

However as the timetable says all groups will have 26 hours a week

I'm in the same boat as you. Well not the same course but I've not gotten my registration pack either. Was hoping that I'd have gotten it by now. I've rang the college but can't get a straight answer from them. Grr.

Oh and draffodx cheers for that link to the timetable. I had no idea what that class code was. :) Appreciate it. Seems like long hours.... especially Monday.

Cheers for that. Really appreciate that. Was getting a bit worried. We won't miss all that much I'm sure.

Your timetable should be online and it's just a matter of finding out what your class code is and slotting into classes like you were always there.
