Unwearable runners

Hey, I bought a pear of Puma "Roma" runners a while back. However, I cannot wear them for more than 5 minutes when walking around. The problem is that the semi circle of material that attaches the thong to the runner cuts into my right big toe. Does anyone know how to soften this bit of material. Cheers
