Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Heres the deal, i have a network setup in the sitting room of my apartment, its NTL/UPC and its running 2 PCs through ethernet, it could run them wirelessly but i prefer ethernet. Now the thing i want to do is connect my media player in the bedroom to my PC in the sitting room however the landlord dosent like me drilling holes and i would have to run the ethernet cable through 2 walls so thats not really an option so i was hoping i could do this:

Run an ethernet cable from the media player to some sort of box that connects wirelessly to the router in the sitting room.

    1) Is this possible
    2) Whats the box called and where can i buy one online
    3) Will it effect the speed when transferring data from the PC to the media player?

Wireless Range Expander Increases the scope of your wireless signal strength. Its a repeater. It does not require any cables; just a power plug.

Wireless Bridge Allows you to connect devices to an existing wireless network via an Ethernet port on your device. Powered by Ethernet: does not require its own power plug.

what kind of Media Player is it?

Wireless will of course be slower than a wire when transferring files. You're discussing 54Mbit vs 100Mbit.

However if you upgrade your network to Wireless N - thats 144Mbps. More than the Ethernet cables will be able to swallow. N is still kinda pricey though. I wouldnt replace all by G equipment just yet. But if you're buying any addon equip, it may as well be N.

Did you know you can run ethernet through a powerline?

Stick one of these babies at each computer and wallah
This is the one i use. We have 5/6 around the house and all work fine. They came in sets of 2. Theres software to program them with a code so they work together if you're using more then 2 together.

So is there any UK or Irish websites you can get those ethernet plugs on?

I extended my ethernet using a couple of Buffalo Bridges (you need 2 to do what you want to do) - you can pick them up on ebay for about €30 each - there is a guy in cork that sells them (actually I bid for them and got them for about half that)

    http://myworld.ebay.ie/etek-components/

So I have an RJ45 ethernet cable from my router into one side of the bridge - and then in my back bedroom I have the other side of the bridge with an ethernet cable going into the back of my PC which doesn't have a wireless card.

Speedwise it performs very well I do some downloading on it but I dont really "push it"

    Regards

    Owen
