The former Mayor of Tramore and Chairman of the Port of Waterford Company Ben Gavin passed away early this morning.

Ben whose active association with the port spans 17 years presided as chairman for 10 years.

During that time the new facility at Belview was devloped and the cruise business was expanded.

Also during his term of office, the Tall Ships’ Races 2005 was hosted by Waterford.

51 year old Ben was also chairman of the Irish Ports Association, the umbrella organisation for the ports industry and was asked to undertake a second term, something which was unprecedented.

He was first elected to Tramore town council in 1999 and was re-elected in 2004. He served as Mayor of the town in 2002 / 2003.

Ben Gavin also presented Credo, the weekly religious programme and Business Brief here on WLRfm.

Mayor of Tramore Councillor Paddy O'Callaghan says Ben was a great friend and colleague.

Nice guy, sad to hear the news of his passing this morning. At least he is now at peace all the same. A character who will be missed around the town. A hard worker as a councillor and mayor for Tramore, his contributions and hard work will never be forgotten.

Very sad... especially given how young he was! RIP :(

First Nicky Fewer and now Ben Gavin... another bad day locally when we lose people who contributed so much to their communities.
