Have the Omniplex got one? I want to see The Final Destination in 3D to see what all the fuss is about.

What is in the Omniplex is a very dated version of 3D technology. The only cinemas with true 3D experience in Ireland are in Dublin.

Neither of the Limerick cinemas even have HD projectors at present. Despite the Omniplex boasting of their hi tech digital system for 3D that has 5.1 surround sound. Shame for them that 7.1 sound is what is used by cinemas that are showing true 3D in high definition, with 10.2 sound being used in parts of Europe and the US in some cinemas, which may replace 7.1.

In short, the picture quality and sound quality there is not a patch on some of the Dublin cinemas.

For a film like Avatar, it would be worth seeing it in Dublin.

The picture and sound is not slightly better, there is a huge difference. Which is why films like The Dark Knight have some scenes that are shot with Imax cinemas in mind. Sure you can watch them on an ordinary cinema screen and say there is only a slight difference because you may never have seen a film shot for an Imax system on an Imax system, but the difference is huge.

For some people, the picture and sound quality is no big deal and they are happy to watch films at an ordinary standard, others want to see the films at the standard that they were made at and for. Just boils down to whether a person is a casual film fan, or a big film fan.

If the person looking to see Avatar is a big film buff then it may be something that they would do. Or they may plan an overnight trip to Dublin where they go shopping or whatever earlier, then catch the film later and maybe a club afterwards.

Personally I would see going to Dublin to see a top film on the best quality format that the country can offer as no more odd than going to Dublin just to see a soccer/hurling/football/rugby game or to go to Dublin just to see a horseshow. At least the film will last longer than the game and to a fan it would be worth it, just as the person going up to see a match will feel the cost is worth it to them. Same way as people travel to Dublin to go shopping. You could say that they could do that here too. But they travel up for a bigger range and more quality.
