Search function missing from start up?

I'm using Vista, and recently upgraded to IE8 [unsure if this matters] but when I go to Start - my search function is gone! I use this often and it's a nuisance as I often use the advanced search options. It has Computer, Network, Control Panel etc but no Search.

When I changed it back to "Classic Start menu" the search thingy is there bu tI use the moderny Start Menu. Anyone know what could be wrong? I mean, it just disappeared one day! :(

Thanks for that. They advise checking start function is ticked on the list but mine is ticked and still isn't there. I don't know what happened to it :(

OK, did you follow this part?

    go to run
    type 'mmc' enter
go to add group policy object editor
find user configuration > administrative templates > start menu and taskbar
find 'remove search from start menu' and double click on it
    choose disabled
