I wonder is there any chance here? I'd love to see it on the big screen when it was released here in the cinema's I was too young to get in, so had to wait to rent it on VHS, I would really love to see MacReady and the lads on the big screen especially Rob Bottin's fantastic special effects. Anyway interesting article by Anne Billson in Last Thursday's Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/aug/27/the-thing-john-carpenter

Saw a poster for it in Cineworld yesterday. Along with Spartacas, Animal House, and Blues Brothers (which I'm most excited about).

    Says it's out 15 September

Yeah I'll totally be going along to this. Does anyone know if it's just a one day showing or if it's gonna be around to a week or something like that?

Do these re-releases usually get a decent screen with good equipment or is it usually screen z with the worse equipment, I wonder when we'll be able to pre-book?

As far as I know they have a decent screen, not 17 but 9 or 8. Unfortunately, cineworld are infamous for advertising these shows and not getting the Irish cert on premise in time so that means they can't actually show it. Lets hope they have this prepared well in advance!

There has been alot of behind the scenes work in regard to getting the cert for these films to be shown in Cineworld. If there is advertising for these films to be shown on a certain date, it should mean the film will go ahead. These re releases probably will be shown in Screen 11.

And advertising for the blues brother a month or two ago took place and the film was cancelled quite last minute, no? The most recent one being the anti-christ where cineworld delayed the release and refunded many customers who had pre booked due to a cert problem.

I know its not the local film managers mistake, its a head office blunder, but i'm not saying it won't go ahead, just at times cineworld have been know to make mistakes. ;)

Its, true, mistakes have happened, but Cineworld managers do their best not to advertise a films release until they have the cert, but blunders do happen.
Stuff like Antichrist would be more a head office problem, the re releases in Cineworld Dublin tend to be more outside the control of the head office.

Is it a one day showing only? Cause as usual with the classic films, i'm working that night. Still pissed that i missed Shawshank Redemption.

Screen 11 doesn't sound like it's the best screen in Cineworld, would I be correct in saying that? Is it only likely to be Cineworld showing it none of the other big chains will show it I take it?

As far as I know, yes, these re releases only happen for one day.

Screen 11 is probably the biggest screen that would be used for these re releases. I think Screen 8 has been used aswell. Screen 11 often is used for special screenings etc. Having said that, it maybe in a different screen altogether, depending on foreseen demand.

It is a film that would hold up well on a modern cinema system. I bought it on Blu Ray some time back and have a pretty good home cinema set up and it looked and sounded amazing.

Yeah same here have decent home setup and don't want to be disappointed with picture/sound quality, how do they do this anyway on these old movies, is it just upscaling a blu-ray or do they get re-issued with new prints?

So who here is going to this screening, although Ive seen it countless times before I really would love to experience it on a big screen with a decent sound system to amplify all of that Ennio Morricone goodness.

Saw it on its original release and have the blu ray but might just be tempted again. By the way if Bob Hauk were here which one of you would say call me Snake.:D:D

Pushed out to the 23rd of October now according to the cineworld site, must have issues getting a cert for it

It is usually the film distributor who is responsible for getting a film certified by IFCO and getting the cert manufactured whether it be in 35mm format or in the newer digital formats; and supplying it to the cinemas in time for release.

When a film is released and shown in the cinema, by law the irish cert must be played on the screen prior to the feature. If the distributor for whatever reason does not provide a cert, the film should not be played by the exhibitor.

With the example mentioned above of 'Antichrist'; this was from a relatively small distributor (Artificial Eye) who either wasn't organised enough or didn't plan enough time to get the Irish cert to the cinema on time.

99% of these issues will only come from the smaller, more unusual, and more broader ranging product that Cineworld is trying to screen. The big mainstream blockbuster films are much more organised in there distribution, as they are screening in nearly every cinema in Ireland.

As for the One Day Special/Classic screenings a lot of these have already been certified in the past; some of these films may need to be re-certified as the ratings may need to be updated/lowered to reflect the changed standards. For the others there may be only one or two 35mm copies of the film left available and the likely-hood of there being an original irish cert with the film is very low. In both of these cases the problem has been with the distributors not wanting to pay out for a new cert to be manufactured for only a limited run in one cinema.

As Kane-N-Nite said there has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes to improve the standards of these screenings; one of the things that Cineworld has done is team up with Universal for the latest batch of special screenings. The films have all been digitally re-mastered and produced in digital format; and as some people have noted new film posters have been produced to improve the marketing of the films. As the films are now on Digital instead of 35mm cinemas are able to simultaneously screen the film on the same date instead of having to send the film on to the next cinema the next week. Unfortunately there were still issues in Ireland, due to the distributor not getting the Irish cert. As some of you will have seen the Cineworld UK website and 'Unlimited' magazine have been advertising some classic screenings that have not happened in Ireland.

As far as I know these issues have now been ironed out and Cineworld Dublin will be catching up with the rest of its cinemas as to which classic screenings it has on certain days. This may mean for the next few months there will be a new classic film every couple of weeks instead of every month, until they are caught up and then the films should run on the same day throughout the whole company.

This week the film is Spartacus (http://www.cineworld.ie/cinemas/75?film=2859); but watch this space for 'The Godfather', 'The Thing', 'The Blues Brothers', 'Scarface', and 'Animal House'.

As far as quality is concerned, these are digitally remastered and should look as good as a brand new copy of the film, with no marks on the picture or sound problems. The films will only be able to play in the digital screens, which should be the most modern and well equiped; in Cineworld Dublin this is in the 4 biggest screens - 17 (400 seats), 9 (335 seats), then 8 or 11 (250 seats).

If I hear about anymore confirmed dates I will try and post them here.
