is it possible to hide specific forums in the latest posts list? Aside from the more general Filter option.

You could subscribe to your favourite forum and then used the subbed list on the front page.

Yup. Youll noticed the Subbed list is empty until you populate it. In your favorite forum go to the forum tools near the top left and pick the subscribe option.
