Looks like Ferrari will be lining up another driver till the end of the year

The injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa is unlikely to race for the Scuderia before the end of this season but the team is confident he will be back for the start of next year.

Massa, who was seriously injured when hit on the head by a spring which fell off the back of Rubens Barrichello’s car during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix at the end of July, visited a specialist in Miami on Monday to review progress on his recovery.

After undergoing a series of tests, the prognosis was good for Massa’s return to racing but the team said he will have plastic surgery in the next few days when a small plate is expected to be inserted in his skull. “Naturally the results (of the tests) were received with great joy and satisfaction at Maranello with the prospect of being able to count on Felipe 100 per cent for the start of the next racing season,” Ferrari said in a statement.

“I’m very happy about the results,” Massa said before boarding the plane back to his home in Sao Paulo. “After the small surgery in the next few days I can finally start to go to the gym to get back into shape and drive some tests in karts. On the track with a Formula One single-seater? Let’s take it step by step: at the moment I’m concentrating on taking up physical activities, which is a great step forward.”

Shame he won't be back this year; but glad to hear he will back in a Ferrari next season.

There has to be a question mark over his return. I think it's most likely he'll be back in F1 but it's still far from 100% certain. Will he still have his edge? Ferrari will give him every chance I think - to to otherwise would be very bad PR especially as Massa is so popular amongst fans and insiders alike.

A return at the tail-end of the year would have hugely benefical, the fact this is not possible has to be disappointing even though Ferrari are putting a brave face on it...
