Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can red and white audio cables produce 5.1 surround sound?

Or do I need an optical cable?

My stereo system has 5.1 Surround Sound and cost me £800 about 3 years ago. Its Toshiba, and I've always considered it a top notch machine. I have it hooked up to my TV/Chorus box/Blu Ray Player, and I also listen to mp3 thru it via my laptop. However, the sound is quite disappointing, particularly through the former. I have the red and white cables linking my equipment to the stereo, but I'm convinced that I can get better sound. I'm told I might be able to achieve surround sound if I get an optical cable, but I need some advice!

Red & white RCA cables produce stereo sound only.
For 5.1 sound you need an optical cable or device that can accept HDMI input.

Just a question? Why you be looking for 5.1 for music played through laptop? Its only going to be stereo anyway (both for music format & AV output from laptop)

If you want a fake 5.1 sound from the laptop on the Toshiba SS, you should look for some settings like Dobly Pro Logic.

Whats the model number of the Toshiba system.

Cheers for getting back to me! Apologies, Toshiba is the make of my laptop A200 series- my stereo system is a Technics- the model number being SC-EH790.

To be honest I'm just trying to optimize the output because I know I can achieve much better sound then I already have. I just dont know how or what cables to get!

True - music (unless specifically recorded in 5.1/7.1) is best listened to in 2 channel stereo. This will give the best reproduction of the sound stage.

For digital 5.1/7.1 you will need a TOSLINK (Optical) connection or a Digital Coaxial connection.

I am not sure tosslink is going to be an option as it does not appear to have an optical input:

    Sockets: FRONT:
3.5mm (1/8") minijack socket for headphones

    REAR:
    Stereo line in via 2 x RCA/phono
6 channel input via 6 x RCA/phono (for use with a DVD with built in Dolby Digital/DTS decoder)
    Stereo line in via 2 x RCA/phono
    Stereo line out via 2 x RCA/phono

Play a CD in it, that should give you an idea of the maximum quality you could expect out of it.
