I'v a problem with B.O.I,I took out a personal loan last year,as i was going into hospital last feb,I asked for a payment HOLIDAY,and was told NO,we don't do that,I am returning to work later this month,(normally loan payment comes out early in the month,)I rang last week asked could they take out payment later in month as I was struggling financially and told them I was returning to work, wrote to my BOI manager/Cust services manager to advise the same.

I was totally ignored,my bank account was plundered, two days ago,I'm totally pxxsed off over, thinking about emptying my bank account, and leaving small amount to cover other direct debits what do people think

I would go into your branch, and arrange a meeting with the loans officer/manager and speak to them about rearranging payments, and appraise them of the situation (new job letters etc.)

But remember, you asked for a loan and got it. They didn't plunder your account, they took out the money on the agreed date etc. its not their fault you can't keep up payments.

They are generally willing to work with folks, so be nice, be polite and don't start making idle threats. I would be surprised it they didn't allow you to move the payment dates etc.

If that attitude came across in your dealings with the bank, I'm not surprised they refused you.

Op, as you suggested, set up a new account with a different bank, set a standing order to send funds weekly/monthly to BOI to cover loan repayments and just dont give them your business. Full stop. Vote with you feet. Walk.

Yeah, vote with your feet. Don't let the door hit you on the way out!

You can apply online for a temporary overdraft which is granted within 24 hours. This will cover any arrears before you get paid. But i'd suggest having a chat with someone about rearranging payments instead. They may have to write up a new contract.

As a disclosure. Im not a banker and have no reason to speak up banks as I am not their biggest fan but . . . .

Banks will generally be reasonable if you are reasonable with them regarding your financial situation. .

I went in January to renegotiate a loan with BOI and they barely did it and told me that they wouldnt change anything on this loan for at least two years (in essence, we dont want to see you for 2 years on this loan!). I went into them a month ago with a revised budget (things have gotten harder since January) and they were quicker to assist me and rearrange my loan and increase the term. On another loan AIB were even quicker to help me!!!

I know personally that if you ask them to change the terms of the contract in the current climate, they will do what they can not to. . If you call in and say, "Im struggling , I need to reduce it", they will ask for a budget to show your expenses (or they should).

However, if you show them that you have made as much effort as possible to budget they will consider reducing your monthly payments and premium holidays. Many many people assume that the first thing they can do is change the terms of their loans before making sacrifices in their lifestyle.

If you show the banks that you are a thrifty spender (not out socialising every week, going on hols etc) and have cut as many costs as possible, they will most certainly negotiate a figure that suits you. But if you still go out and spend a fair bit on non essentials then why should the banks reduce your payments so you can maintain your lifestyle ?

Banks do not want you to fall into arrears . .They are not charitys but Its not in their interest, it actually serves them no benefit to "screw" people in this way.

My suggestion . Do up a fair, concise family budget (everybody should do one anyways!). Stress test yourself (Banks were well impressed when I went in to renegotiate my loan) and be honest.

If your unhappy definitely leave. I was unhappy with a bank for similar reasons (very bad communication) so I left. I've been delighted ever since. New bank are very approachable and personal.
