    I'm toying with sticking a modern diesel into a 70's XJ6 or a Merc 123 or 116.
Anyone got anything suitable for sale at the moment? A car with no engine or a blown engine would probably suit. Although I'd prefer somehting that is driving initially.

Must be pre 1980 and I'm looking for something cheap. Doesn't have to be too pretty as long as no rot. I see decent looking Jags out there that are complete and driving for less than €2K so something needing engine work should b a bit cheaper.

It's only an initial idea at the moment so I'm not 100% sure I'm going to go ahead and will depend on what's out there to a certain extent. (Just so you don't think I'm a timewaster)

I'd possibly be open to other similar 70's saloons as well as long as they are RWD, preferably 4 door, largish. I do have a thing for the Jags though :D

PM me if you have anything suitable.

Not trying to sound smart but wouldn't it make much more sense to do an LPG conversion?

Sorry but the ghost of Sir William Lyons will not let you put a diesel in an XJ6!

Ha ha I knew someone was going to come back with an issue on converting a Jag. to Diesel.

I'd consider converting an SD1 as well but I thought the live axle would be a bit too seventies for an everyday car ;)

I already have one of Lyon's rarest V12's to keep him happy in his grave.:D

    And sure I don;t thank anyone would miss an XJ6 3.4 or 2.8 engine:rolleyes:

I don't really see the advantage of LPG in Ireland - I mean where can you actually get it? It's not like in the UK where a lot of service stations stock it.

Can't say I've noticed anything wrong with the way mine rides and handles.

In fact I enjoy it a lot more than many modern cars but maybe thats just me :)

It's all but impossible to get LPG here any more. I learned this the hard way a few years back when I imported a 280SL that only ran on LPG!

re the fitting of diesel engines to Jags.
having been a car fan all my life and now wondering how sad a type I am to constantly think of thirty or more years ago.

In the 70 s it was quite the thing in the country to convert big cars to diesel.
I remember these guys whose speciality was to put dieels in Humber hawks and su.per snipes. As far as I can recall really the only diesel option was to put a Perkins in,
I vividly remember a Jaguar ,Mark 1X ,as i recall, eg no AIK 175 i think, awaiting its transplant. Do not know if it ever happened
Many years leter I remember a fellow who used buy Citroen ZM s for small money and fit Citroen BX turbo diesels into them. The same man,Who has since pased on ,would fit diesels toRenault 25 s.

    Regards, Rugbyman

I think you are quoting figures from the other popular transplant the BMC 1,5.
the perkins which had maybe a four and a six pot was a more upmarket powerhouse. in todays parlance a turbo boosted gti 16 valve XLR.

    Regards Rugbyman

Maybe I was unfair... this was based on my experience of test driving a Range Rover with a Perkins 3.3 litre (I think).. max speed 40mph!

AH Jaysus - I said a modern diesel engine - not one of those 70's soot chuckers. I'm not a diesel fan myself but I have come around a bit

I'd be thinking of a BMW turbo diesel, Merc turbo diesel or if I was really feeling brave on the electronics front - the Jag / Land Rover TDV6.

But back to the question before going off track - any XJ6's or Mercs out there?

A diesel needs a blower to be of any use. Theres a guy i know with a 200D Merc Fintail,my 998cc 100A is a rabid sportscar compared to it. That Merc though lovely looking is neither fun nor easy to drive, therefore IMO negating the point of a classic really, unless you get a kick out of agricultural performance!:D

Have yet to see a proper conversion. Saw a few classics Mercs at Limerick show last year with diesel conversions. I can see the benefit, with lots of those big 3 litre cars doing less than 20 mpg and most diesels doing 35mpg, the cost of motoring would halve.:D

Speaking of which, here's an odd diesel conversion:)

I have dropped the price on my 450 SLC which is 1979.
Drives very well needs a little TLC but in all a very good and presentable SLC which you can use straight away.
Looking for as close to 2350.00 as possible. She is not mint but well worth the asking price and a usable from the get go.
Pm me. or call me number is on donedeal advert.

Can anyone help me find someone in Ireland or the UK that could supply a Trunk Lid and Quarter Panel Extensions for a 65 Mustang Coupe?

I have them ordered from a company in the states but I have had so little communication from them that I am asking for my money back, the postage is $150 more than the asking price of the parts.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

There's a chap out in Ashbourne with a coupe for sale that is only good for breaking IMO (John Newman Cars), there's plenty of stuff in the UK, for example: http://mustangparts.essexracingclassics.com/ Failing that you can't beat NPD: http://npd.dirxion.com/WebProject.asp?BookCode=tan09flx&from=2# but as you know with heavy parts shipping can be as much if not more than the cost of the parts plus you'll have charges on top once landed.
