Vintage tax... classic tax.... cheap tax.... call it whatever you like.. it's still only €52 a year :D:D:D

It's only called one thing: vintage tax.

Well if you want to be pedantic, it's actually vintage/veteran.

Two words with the same meaning when used as an adjective.

^ You are doing a fair bit of scaremongering on the SORN issue. Where has it been said (i) that there will be a fee and (ii) that classics are in the firing line?

The number of vintage/classic cars in use (even occasionally) is miniscule compared to the total car pool.

1%, so I doubt theres much sleep lost in Leinster house.

Anyway, classic cars should be seen as a hobby like GAA or Rugby or horse racing and most of those get subsidised not taxed!

All cars not being used that have not being taxed will be required to be sorned regardless of their taxation category.
Naieve to think a fee won't be applied .
Changes are on the way , in what manner they will be applied can only be surmised by past actions of the dept of Transport.

Go and look at the UK SORN system and then come back here. SORN only applied only to cars that were taxed when it was introduced or subsequently taxed afterwards.
If a car has not been taxed since the SORN system was introduced its not on the system and therefore not liable for it. Simples.

I agree changes are probably on the way here but getting excited over it won't help anything.

it's all about revenue from registered cars not adding up. Over 5 percent of cars defaulting on road tax. I expect classic cars in sheds that are not eligible for vintage tax fall into this net also. The government is hungry for money and you can be sure they will start chasing this will little excitement but great zeal.
Comparing a sorn system in the Uk to a system over here doesn't hold water. DVLA allow one to sorn their car for free but they are dealing with greater numbers and I expect strong lobby groups.
I can't see the sorn application being free as they will look for an incentive for owners of older cars to scrap them by charging them to keep them.

hi all... selling a 1981 Mercedes 380 SE thats had a professional LPG conversion. Runs pretty well, and has a good interior. Bought it to tidy up and use as a daily driver due to cheap(er) running costs, but not in a position to do so at the moment unfortunately and don't want to have the car sitting around untill I am. Filled her with LPG today in Finglas, at .799 a litre.
Willing to move on the price so save hassle of dealing with idiots!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

I like your W126 - one of my favourite colours too!

Does it have a current NCT? If not, when did it last pass?

  • Registered Users Posts: 822 ✭✭✭johnty56

yeah I probably should have put more detail in ad, but its ackward to type. Its a car I bought in UK. Hasn't been used for a while, last MOT'd 2010.
Bodywork is great in most places, there is no sunroof which has without a doubt helped!. Ends of sills tatty and need doing.
My brother kindly sorted out a problem with back brakes and changed some plugs which weren't firing today and tells me car is driving much better. Sounds better anyway!
There is some history with the car, but not a huge amount. It sits well, and is comfortable to be in, and i really believe it'll make a fine car for someone.

^ Is the W126 registered here?

not reg here yet, but only recently arrived..

A bit harder to sell then, seeing as it will cost €200 to register it and it will have to be NCT'd.

maybe, its not a bad car though, and i'm willing to be flexible on price.. problem these days i think is no one has any money!

There's no doubt the market for classics is not good here at the moment. But as Esel suggested it is a bit of a risk to have to spend €255 to put the car through the NCT and then to possibly find out about any serious failings

Imho you'd sell it much easier if you put it through the NCT yourself. Although the LPG installation is a big bonus :)

Mercedes SL/SLC Parts Wanted. I have just purchased a 1985 Mercedes 280SL and I'm looking for bumper chromes front and back and a chrome strip that runs along the side of the car below the door (left hand side). Would anyone have these or know of a breakers yard specialising in old Mercedes car. Many thanks

Anyone looking for a winter project? Bought a 1980 230 E Bay to-day for £410 (E500) + E367 Transport, + E200, V.R.T. + E20, Petrol. The car looks very good, but the owner tells me it is quite rusty underneath, and needs a lot of work. If anyone is interested at E1500. Get in touch. NO offers, Silly or otherwise. The car will be in next week so watch D.D. for photos. I dont know how to download photos from E.Bay. !!:):)

Read the ad, he has a spare bonnet with no rust that he is selling with the car, but it would be worth asking if he will sell it seperate
