Going for consultation in hairdressers

I want to do something with my hair but I'm not really sure what. It's medium brown and quite long at the moment. I got highlights this time last year but they're growing and fading out now.

I've heard about people going for consultations in hair salons and I was wondering what the story was.

Is it ok to go in if you really don't know what you want done? Can I just go in and ask what styles/colours they think will suit me? Do you have to book/pay?

    Cheers
