Not a very streamlined finish between the red brick and central barrier. Looks shoddy. Surely a potential hazard for North-bound traffic?

There will probably be a short stretch of tapering Arnco barrier along the top on the red bricks from the end of the Jersey barrier to the end of the red brick part, where it meets the rou
    ndabout.

Do the line painting machines automatically follow the previously placed white dots or is it manual by the driver?

All automatic. There's some great videos on Youtube of such machines.

Its kinda surreal seeing a motorway sign to Sligo, great pics. Should be interesting the AADT on the new stretches.

M17 junction 17... jaysus. That seems to indicate there are specific junctions planned for future motorway extensions to collooney right?

No. It's simply a continuation of the M18 junctions.

    16. N66 Gort/Loughrea
    17. R458 Kiltiernan etc.
    18. M6 Galway/Dublin
    19. N63 Roscommon/Claregalway
    20. N17/N83

If I was to obey every sign there would be little or no pics

Good that they continued the junction numbers as the mainline continues straight through Rathmorrissey. But would it be heresy to say that the M18 should have continued to Tuam and become the N17 there? It's odd having a motorway starting at junction 18.

Glad M17 didn't obey those signs. This thread would have been far far poorer if he did. I hope this thread is archived as in the future it'll be a great documentation of the construction.

Enjoying this thread - Thank you M17

I notice from the image that Tuam is 31 km from the roundabout at Rathmorissy....traveling at 120 km for 31km results in a ravel time of 15mins. That is some going. Being from south Mayo and living only just under 20 mins from Tuam, I will have a new route to Dublin. Happy days.

    Which is daft.

I'm presuming that the logic is that no more motorways will be built north of Tuam so there was no point in having an M17 J1 and M17 J2 and ... that's it.

But if that was the thinking, then they simply should have done what you suggested and had the M18 go to Tuam. Signs at Rathmorrisey could then have read M18 (N) and M18 (S).

I'm sure this has been asked many times but because I cant find a recent update I was wondering if anyone has any update on the opening date of the M17/M18 motorway. I met someone at a match on Tuesday who had read somewhere that the entire road was to be opened on 11th September. Seems like there is still quite a bit of surfacing and lining to do in quite a few places so I wondered if this could be true.

Problem with making it all m18 would be that the current galway to tuam road would remain n17 this discouraging traffic to use motorway

Retaining it as a national road with a 100km/h limit is effectively the same thing though

It won't be a national road surely? Won't it be re-designated RXXX?

They may keep a 100km/h limit on it though. I'd say there'd be uproar if they don't and national guidelines - widely and pathetically ignored by councils - state that if it has wide shoulders it should stay at 100km/h.
