Ext 18 bring you off at Oranmore?

Exit 18 is the Rathmorrissy interchange for the M6, M17, M18
Exit 19 on the M6 is the Oranmore exit
Exit 19 on the M17 is the Roscommon exit
No Exit 19 on the M18

    Baile Chlair = Clare Town!

Many place-names are different as Gaeilge - you have to look no further than Dublin!

The yellow signs will likely stay put (the L2052 in Co. Kerry still has N21 signs even though it was bypassed 11 years ago)

Interesting design for the pedestrian bridge. I wonder why it takes that circuitous route rather than straight over the roundabout?

Has there ever been any accidents at this junction with traffic having to merge and go around a tight loop?

Its a pity that each side of the pedestrian bridge wasn't a mirror image of the other. Wonder why this was? They had the space to do it.

    Space, yes!

But, why not run it across the roundabout? That would have been shorter.

They never do that in any of the pedestrian bridges in Ireland anyway.

I haven't been to too many other country's to comment on theirs.

The bridge deck needs to be about 4 metres above the road, going straight over the roundabout would need a much longer span, a longer ramp (rising/falling further away from the junction) and piers on the roundabout.

in places like Milton Keynes, they built four underpasses at the roundabout so pedestrians go under the roundabout to the centre and under again to the other side.

You really wouldn't want an underpass in Tuam.

I dont think I have posted on this thread in the long time I have been keeping up with it.
I've never cared about so much about a road in my life .
I'm always checking in on this thread and seeing what Pics M17 has in store for the latest update :-D
It's Some effort you have put into this thread,
Possibly the most detailed up to date thread ever on boards? That I've seen anyway.

    Well done man.

Given that I started this thread over a decade ago, I really ought to get down there ASAP after opening for a few pics. Shame its opening on a weekday or I'd go to the opening.

There used to be a pedestrian bridge going straight over the sarsfield Rd roundabout in Cork before the road layout was changed

That is correct, but the space and terrain was there to do it.

You could use two shorter spans actually. Straight ramps would be an issue, but most pedestrian bridges don't use straight ramps anyway, which makes me think maybe it's a cycle track.

You could drop down this Sunday. There's a cycling event taking place along the length of it. Hoping to get to it myself.

    Why would it cost more?

What I'm saying is the northern ramp has 3 turns, the southern ramp has 1 turn. Why not have the ramps the same, either 3 or 1 turn on both, and be a mirror image of each other. From a design perspective it would look better.
