Quick question: would it be expensive to fix Rathmorrissey Junction to provide free-flowing movements instead of that roundabout? It looks like plenty of greenfield space was taken with the roundabout, that could make an upgrade easier.

I can 100% guarantee that will not happen.

They may change it in 15 years or so but not in the near distant future anyway.

At best, they can do a cheap paint job to make it partially freeflow, left lane turns left on joining and leaving the roundabout.

I’ve been saying this since day 1. Cloverleafs are not very good as there is huge weaving issues.

A partially unrolled cloverleaf would have been an excellent junction and may have cost less than a 3 stack Roundabout.

A crazy decision to build this by the way. It will be bottom of the list to fix due to it being so new I suspect.

There is a problem with that design that is no better than the Rathmorrisy design.

If you look at it, those cars exiting the motorway have to cross the path of those entering at the same junction. At least on the Rathmorrisey junction, there is a 'Give Way' and clear priority. Those on the bridge of the cloverleaf have very little distance to swap with those other cars transferring the other way. Who has right of way? How do drivers cope with slow moving vehicles like large low loaders moving heavy machinery?

Is there a standard distance for such traffic flows?

I think the Rathmorrisey junction could be improved by a few paint jobs.

A Cloverleaf was always suggested on here as an alternative to the 3 Level Stack at Rathmorrisey.

I'd hate to see Irish drivers on a Cloverleaf. We can't merge properly on the M50 junctions which are as close as you'd have on a cloverleaf. Would be carnage.

Cloverleafs aren’t good as exits follow entrances.

Partially unrolled cloverleafs do not have this issue as all exits are before entrances.

Here was the proposed M20/M40 junction which was to be a partially unrolled cloverleaf. Would have been perfect for Rathmorrisey.

    They should have done this.

I thought it was you on opening day; i was the 5th car on at Gort, and was towing my caravan up the length of the new road, and seen a gent who waved back at us from that bridge! Camera and all. :-D

(Unless it was a competitor..."M18", perhaps?)

    :-D

Drove this over Xmas while going from Cork to Donegal and found it brilliant but then you get onto the Tuam to Sligo road and realise how bad it is.

Are there any plans to upgrade Tuam to Sligo road?

It's only bad in a few parts mostly up towards Tubercurry.

    None active at present

The only active schemes on the Atlantic Corridor at the minute are Cork-Limerick and the Ballybofey/Stranorlar bypass

Drove the new road over the past few days, massive improvement on the old road.

But it's not very straight, does anyone know why the route is so twisty??

And secondly, the approaches to the R332 bridge over the N17 are quite steep, does anyone know why they are so??
