Surprised to see no mention at all of the N83 on there.

I suppose it sensibly means no wrong signs when it is inevitably detrunked.

Traveled from US last week so first time taking the new road from Shannon airport, final destination was Claregalway. Took it easy and it was about 55 mins in total. On my return to the airport on Sunday morning it was snowing quite a bit especially in Clare but not a salt truck or plough anywhere to be seen so had to take it easy. Also, it's a good thing I remember my gaeilge since there are no signs for Claregalway at all, only Baile Chlair. I'll have to alert my American cousins who are going over in a few months.

There was no need for a plough as there wasn't that much snow on Sunday morning.

In relation to gritting, it's mostly done at night - as it should be. I travel the motorway regularly and the gritters are very active.

The M17/M18 PPP is maintained by DirectRoute who have a contractual requirement for winter maintenance along the route.

If the road is not gritted then get in touch with them.

I'd like to point out that ALL SIGNS for the old N18 are still in place even though and not changed to the R458 or the N67 . I reported this to the TII the don't seem to listen anymore as if they did listen they would change the "Marker Posts" on the M18 and stop making a fool of the emergency services.

Has anyone from Mayo (say Castlebar) used this route to go to Dublin.....if yes, how has it worked out compared to going through either Longford or Roscommon?

Yes, I have. It's longer by distance but I did the route quicker than the n5 option. Far less chance of getting stuck behind Mikey outside Frenchpark delivering bales on his tractor.

Traffic volumes on the N5 near Frenchpark have dropped 14% year on year from 2017. This is likely due to the effect you say above.

The proportion of this traffic that is HGV has risen from 9.8% to 11% so its still popular with the trucks.

That rise for HGVs percentage is due to the reduction of private cars, with HGV traffic remaining the same.

That's what I was saying, a higher proportion of cars and non HGV vehicles are switching to the M17-M6 route than HGVs are.

Less benefits for the HGVs given their speed limiting anyway and the extra distance involved.

Is it a trick of the light, or has that Tuam sign been overlaid.

Thanks to the little-known North Galway Tectonic Plate, Tuam has shifted 4 kilometres closer to Galway!
