never actually done a cpu upgrade before, so ill ask here to make sure i dont do something irrevocable.

here is the cpu summary, i hope its all the relevant information.

I want to get a cheap dualcore for it, if thats even possible. the CPU is a gross rage-inducing chokepoint in everything I do here at work and i wanna ask the bosses to let me upgrade it. I just wanna be able to do my work. And everything is slow. I tried opening up a big spreadsheet (>5MB) and the thing nearly died on me. web browsing is dog slow as well - it takes ages to load boards pages and anything with flash is a disaster.

I'm not aware of any socket 478 dual core processors.

    Your options are limited.

You didn't need to get that technical ;) Usually the CPU model name and speed and the motherboard model and the CPU socket is enough.

Unfortunately in this case it also suggests you're SOL on this one :( Mobo is just ancient by this point and does not support anything newer than what you already have. You're going to need a new motherboard, new memory (you probably have ancient DDR in there) and possibly a new PSU. And maybe a new GPU if you're gaming (if not then make sure the new mobo has onboard video!). Owwwwch :o

    2.7Ghz Celeron with 128k L2 cache...ouch. A 2.8-3Ghz S478 Pentium 4 with 1 or 2mb of l2 will show a whopper of a difference even for very little money.

thats what i was thinking. theres a P4 next to me and it is zsnappy by comparison. no typo.

but which one? there are so many  just search sock 478 on newegg then? do i need to concern myself with nano's and wattage?

Basically most of the Northwoods will work.

What you are looking for is a socket478 model with a 400 MT/s FSB. A faster model with higher FSB will most likely work as well but it depends on your mobo. It will also be clocked down if your mobo doesn't support a faster FSB.

All right, I've lost my temper! :D

    HWVS070909.png

Yes, that's €150 shipped, but you do want a decent dual-core CPU and on S478 that just ain't gonna happen. Sickens me that shipped price is still lower than Komplett even with 20% of the cost going on p&p...

Of course, if that machine you're upgrading is a mass-produced non-upgradeable BTX PoS from Dell then it doesn't matter - the only thing its fit for is a real-life Recycle Bin :o

EDIT: Removed last para. Something I just remembered: Overheal, don't suppose you could give us specs or at least model name of your mobo? I want to know its max possible FSB, but given it started life with a S478 Celeron I'm not very confident. It might be FSB400 max, and 3GHz FSB400 Northwoods are hard to find used - I can only find them in the US for ~€100 new

Bear in mind that overheal is in the US solitaire :)

D'oh. Keep forgetting that no matter how many times I'm told... :o

Gist of it: Unless you can settle for a 2.6GHz 512kb P4 or you're lucky and have a decent mobo then it may be wiser to stick in new (cheap) CPU/mobo/RAM than blow $160+ on an OEM 3GHz P4. And even if you do have access to FSB533/800 a faster (3GHz+) P4 may put a lot more strain on the PSU (89-115W TDPs) but at least you might be able to avail of HyperThreading, so you can still have two cores... They'll be virtual cores, mind...

well bearing in mind the max draw on the celeron is 80 odd watts, I probably cant have anything higher unless we start talking about money-money. as it is you can get a used p4 off amazon for $10 and ship.

You really dont need to go into such useless detail. Just cpu model and motherboard maker and model is all thats needed.
