Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wind Turbines: Horizontal or Vertical Axis

Intend mounting a wind turbine on a commercial roof (urban area) as part of a class project. It will not be a large turbine and will be used to power a water pump. We will be designing and manufacturing the wind turbine ourselves and will not be from a kit. Information has been compiled on the pros/cons of either system (majority in favour of a vertical axis wind turbine).

If any of you readers has experience in constructing a wind turbine or has any comments to make on the merits/disadvantages of either type of turbine I would welcome your contribution.

If you are only going to power a pump would a mechanical drive to a pump not be better, far less complex and even in light winds will produce some results.

    Hi,

Have a look at Hugh Piggot's site for info on wind turbines and his assessment of roof mounted (which is very negative)

    Hi Tikkal

id probably go with a permanent magnet alternator turbine that can generate current at low speeds

    Look up windpump

main difference is that you use a fan and this gives plenty of torque

this also means the turbine can have a smaller diameter which is important since regulations require lots of space for them

it doesn't get simpler than one moving part, but not for the roof

This guy runs a course on how to build your own turbine, he might be able to help you.
